‘River on Fire’ was written after a particularly horrific fire season in our home of Mparntwe/Alice Springs. While crossing the Lhere Mparntwe (Todd River) one night, we were devastated to see enormous river red gums alight from a buffel-fuelled fire. These ancient trees have incredible cultural and ecological significance, and their loss is deeply affecting. In the days after the fire, the feathers of birds killed by the flames could be seen in the river sand. 

Buffel grass was intentionally planted across Central Australia in the 1960s and 1970s to boost the cattle industry and keep down the dust. This introduced species has permanently altered the landscape, reducing the number of bush foods and wildflowers, and covering hunting tracks and sacred places. Buffel fires burn intensely and frequently, killing native plants, especially trees, and risking homes and lives. 

After decades of advocacy from community groups, buffel grass was finally declared a weed in the NT in 2024. However, we are still waiting on meaningful funding and policy for the rehabilitation of Country.
