Life-Centered Health Care: Healthy By Design

In this four-part series, Bob discusses breaking down the complexity of sustainable living, the pitfalls of greenwashing, and why sustainability should be treated as a “no judgement zone.” In addition, Bob tackles complicated issues like corporate lobbying power and how income and race are inextricably linked to environmental policies.

From metal straws to veganism, our choices impact the environment. But when large corporations make environmentally-damning decisions, it can feel like our choices don’t matter. How can we take back control in our own lives by building greener habits? Further, how does environmental racism and classism act as barriers toward making the world a more environmentally sustainable place?
In this third episode, Bob Brinkmann, author of Practical Sustainability: A Guide to a More Sustainable Life, speaks to individual environmental responsibility in the face of corporate lobbying power, greenwashing, and generational apathy. Bob chats about the process and effectiveness of his Thirty-Day Sustainability Challenge, and the importance of representing sustainability as a “no judgement zone.” Last, Bob surfaces the national and global issues of environmental racism, and how communities can enact greater change through municipal appointments and local economic investments.

Episode #3 What Difference Can One Person Really Make?

Human activity has undoubtedly impacted our planet’s systems. With deforestation, air pollution, and plastic waste, can we still call the natural sciences “natural”? Or have humans changed the planet so much that the “natural” and “human” worlds are now indistinguishable? Could seeing ourselves as part of the earth’s systems help bring more urgency to the climate crisis?

In the final episode of this four-part series, Bob Brinkmann, author of Practical Sustainability: A Guide to a More Sustainable Life, discusses the dynamic field of earth sciences. As humans continue to impact the “natural” world, the earth science disciplines must come together to study major issues like climate change and sustainability—not get bogged down by the silos or traditions of higher education. In addition, Bob digs into how librarians can assist in sustainability research through the available data in special collections and frequent communication with scholars. Last, he emphasizes the importance of measurable outcomes in the sustainability movement, along with becoming an advocate and evangelist for this kind of lifelong work.

Policy expert and climate scientist Anna Farro Henderson explores how science is done, discussed, legislated, and imagined in her new book, Core Samples: A Climate Scientist’s Experiments in Politics and Motherhood. Grounded in her experience as an environmental policy advisor to Minnesota Senator Al Franken and Governor Mark Dayton, Henderson brings readers behind the closed doors of discovery and debate—and illuminates the messy, contradictory humanity of our scientific and political institutions. Here, Henderson is joined in conversation with Tenzin Dolkar and Roberta Downing on getting your voice heard in politics.



Anna Farro Henderson is an award-winning writer, PhD scientist, and environmental policy expert. She is a fellow at the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota, teaches at the Loft Literary Center, and works in climate advocacy. She lives with her family in St. Paul, where she makes daily visits to the Mississippi River.

Tenzin Dolkar has more than 15 years of experience in policy development, advocacy, community organizing, and management with state and local governments. Dolkar is a council member on the Metropolitan Council, and has previously served as the State of Minnesota’s Rail Director and as a policy advisor on transportation, agriculture, and rural issues for Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton.

Roberta Downing is a public policy professional with more than 20 years of experience. Downing held a congressional fellowship administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and served on the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions under Senator Edward M. Kennedy; has held several academic and policy-focused positions, including the offices of US Senator Sherrod Brown and DC Mayor Muriel E. Bowser; and is principal and co-founder of Harper Downing LLC, a Minnesota-based government affairs consulting firm.

AfricaNow! December 4, 2024 COP29—Climate Justice Shortchanged

Topic and Guest: Today AfricaNow! is following up from our show of three weeks ago during first days of the UN Climate Change Conference began in Baku, Azerbaijan.  The conference was scheduled from November 11 until November 22, 2024, and it was the 29th annual meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the 1992 UN climate agreement (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change [UNFCCC]). The agreement was put into force in 1994—30 years ago this year.  

COP29 conference ended a day later than scheduled.  At end the Global North pledged to provide $300billion to the Global South in assisting it to move to a low carbon economy and adapt its infrastructure to handle the impacts of extreme weather.  The Global South had demanded at least $1 trillion.  Thus, members of the Global South walked out of the negotiation rooms.   Representatives from the Global South were quoted in the Guardian newspaper saying: “[We are] outraged and deeply hurt by the outcome of COP29. Once again, the countries most responsible for the climate crisis have failed us. This is not just a failure. It’s a betrayal.” (Backroom deals and betrayal: how Cop29’s late $300bn deal left nobody happy, by Fiona Harvey, The Guardian, November 26, 2024)

Yesterday I had a conversation with Dakar-based activist Muhammed Lamin Saidykhan, Head of Building Power Department at the Climate Action Network (CAN) International.   Muhammed Lamin Saidykhan who attended the climate conference in Baku.  The conversation dissects the outcomes of COP29: the continuous unmet pledges by the Global North (countries heavily responsible for the climate change); unmet demands of climate justice for countries most impacted by climate change; fossil fuel industry’s negative impact; next steps and more.
