Wael Farah is a research scientist at the SETI Institute, where he searches the stars for alien life. The Allen Telescope Array (ATA), where Wael conducts his research, is located at the Hat Creek Observatory in Northern California. The ATA is a collection of 42 relatively small dishes (antennas) that are designed to work together for SETI searches.

In this episode of The Show About Science, Nate talks to Wael about how the Allen Telescope Array works, fast radio bursts, SETI, and what might lure extraterrestrial life to earth.

In this Roots of Reality Experiences episode, historian Ben Baumann talks with planetary habitability expert Dr. James Kasting about his work on the search for life beyond Earth, its challenges, and what can be done to increase our chances of finding it.

(James Kasting is an Evan Pugh Professor at Penn State University, where he holds joint appointments in the Departments of Geosciences and in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science. He earned an undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Physics from Harvard University in 1975 and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Michigan in 1979. Prior to coming to Penn State in 1988, he spent 2 years at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, and 7 years in the Space Science Division at NASA Ames Research Center south of San Francisco. His research focuses on the evolution of planetary atmospheres and climates and on the question of whether life might exist on planets around other stars. In 2018, he was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences. His semi-popular book, How to Find a Habitable Planet (Princeton University Press), was published in 2010.)

#37 Searching for Life in the Universe with Dr. James Kasting

When you start looking at the Universe, you realize that there are more signals out there than are simply generated by stars. On the one hand, you have astrophysical objects like gas, dust, plasma, as well as stellar corpses and their remnants. But there are also failed stars that didn't quite make it to the nuclear fusion stage that defines our Sun and the other stars like it: brown dwarfs.

Beyond that, there may also be signatures of planets like Earth out there: planets inhabited by an intelligent civilization. It's of paramount importance, when asking the biggest questions, to make sure that we aren't fooling ourselves, but that's where projects like SETI and Breakthrough Listen come in: to help us extract legitimate science where "wishful thinking" has the potential to lead us in precisely the most dangerous direction: the possibility of fooling ourselves.

I'm so pleased to welcome Ph.D. Candidate Macy Huston to the podcast, as we explore the less commonly seen side of the Universe: from exoplanets to brown dwarfs to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. With the advent of the James Webb Space Telescope, we really are going to see a tremendous change in what we know!

“Extraterrestrial Life” as the opener and title track is named is a creative story, packed with emotional deep grooves, atmospheric textures and well crafted melodic hooks. He is to send you on a truly progressive journey from start to finish here. 

“Starfall” as the 2nd production is baptized as is a warm and driving production, packed with tickling bass lines, tight percussion and those atmospheric pads to create a wonderful texture and energy to the track. To spice things up even more, you are to witness a fair trade of evolving melodic arrangements to deliver a truly complete package of progressive house music, this is definitely as good as it gets, super stuff! 

To round things off we see a 3rd addition to the release, titled as “They Coming When You Sleep”. This is another majestic production from Serge Landar, walking the same path as we always try and keep on the label. In that we find creative melodies, warm bass lines and tight bass lines to keep the track with a superb energetic style, with a deeper touch. We can’t say less than that Serge landar has nailed it and we are so looking forward to see the reactions.

In September 2020, the internet exploded with news of life existing at the Earth's twin planet. The James Clerk Maxwell telescope in Hawaii and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile found the biomarker phosphine - a phosphorus and hydrogen molecule - high in the Venusian atmosphere. But there are deep doubts about how life could exist at Venus, given its hellish surface temperature and crushing noxious atmosphere. Scientists admit there will need to be corroborative measurements and that phosphine can exist without any connection to life.
