Gamardah Fungus is the collaborative project between Ukrainian musicians Igor Yalivec and Sergio Berry, based in the city of Dnipro. Since forming in 2009, the duo has explored the intersections of Ambient, drone, and experimental music, releasing on many labels including Flaming Pines, Polar Seas Recordings, and Hidden Vibes. Their sound world is informed as much by cinema, folklore and mysticism as by music itself, drawing from classical, jazz, noise and minimalism, with influences that include Eric Satie, Krzysztof Penderecki, Fennesz, Stockhausen and Bohren & Der Club of Gore. Over the years, Gamardah Fungus have built a reputation for their atmospheric live performances and conceptual studio work, often inspired by the landscapes and cultural heritage of their homeland.

Trees and Roots marks a significant shift in the duo’s creative process. For the first time, they abandoned the guitar that had been central to their previous work and here they embraced a more tactile, exploratory approach. Sergio used a series of custom electroacoustic instruments using unconventional materials: wooden and plastic boxes, strings, stones and even paper envelopes fitted with piezoelectric sensors. These objects were manipulated, processed through pedals, and layered into intricate textures. Alongside these are Igor’s immersive Ambient drones created by using Eurorack modular synthesizers. Field recordings gathered across Ukraine from over the years add another dimension of intimacy, anchoring the album in the natural and cultural environments that inspired it. No virtual instruments were used; the entire project was captured, mixed and mastered in the analog domain.

Written during an ongoing time of conflict in Ukraine, this album carries with it a deep emotional and cultural resonance. Rather than respond to these challenges directly, Igor and Sergio chose to look inward toward the enduring symbols of their heritage. Trees and Roots is dedicated to the mythology, folklore and natural beliefs of their ancestors. Trees have long been sacred in Ukrainian culture, representing strength, wisdom and spiritual continuity. Each track bears the Latin name of a tree revered in these traditions, reflecting both its physical roots and the metaphorical roots of identity and belonging. In this sense, the album is both a personal and cultural statement: a meditation on resilience, memory and the quiet power of nature to heal and sustain.

The sound of Trees and Roots is meditative yet charged with a fragile tension, balancing organic resonance and abstract tones. Drones swell like distant winds through the forest while percussive textures suggest movement beneath the surface. It is an album of layers and spaces, inviting deep listening and reflection. At its heart lies a quiet determination: to preserve the stories and symbols that shape a people, even in times of uncertainty and upheaval.

Nieubłaganie zbliża się jesień - czy jest inna pora roku tak osobliwa akustycznie? Może wiosna w sumie, nieważne... Ważne jest to, że 13 września w krakowskiej Spółdzielni Ogniwo odbędzie się trzeci koncert (z) nagrań terenowych, gdzie wystąpią: po dłuższej przerwie Asia Wabik, legenda field recordingu w Polsce, Maciej Wirmański i świeża geniuszka roksana niewiadomska. 

W audycji ehh hahah, organizator wydarzenia, przedstawił przekrój różnych utworów tych artystów (i nie tylko!), który może dać lekką podpowiedź czego można się spodziewać tego 13 września. Ewentualnie ktoś może się też całkiem słusznie domyślić, że nie ma co się czego spodziewać, tylko trzeba przyjść!

how do you go from a ride in subway to an area filled with wires hanging from buildings surrounding you with the continuous buzzes and hums of electricity? to be honest I don't know either I just find field recordings fun and will apply more to my music. especially with a Chinese vibe this sound has to create this meditative journey through a sci-fi film you only experience through your imagination.

You exit the portal, your insides feeling tingly from being reformed near-instantly. You can barely open your eyes...Endless red sand is blowing all around you, but in the distance you see something: lights? You enter into a cramped, sprawled town with a few wandering souls. Gnarled roots create natural attachments to the jagged buildings and even serve as lamp posts. In the distance, a gigantic tree's roots sprawl out like outstretched hands. 

You learn from a lamp-lighter that every new root is a new world that has yet to be fully opened, so the lamps are honoring the new souls that are yet to enter The Gnarled.

Whitelabrecs was set up by Harry Towell in late 2015 as another outlet to put out experimental electronic/acoustic music. It followed Harry’s previous labels Audio Gourmet, Tessellate and Warehouse Decay and focuses on a collectable series of highly limited edition vinyl-effect CDr packaging, with the first 50 releases influenced by white label vinyl records. The label also runs a digital only series called eRecords, with each of these releases including a special PDF booklet.

Update on my album: 42 mins of music is fully done + mixed pretty much perfectly, so far, just not posted yet, because I'm thinking now I need to work on the art and story more. Part 1 is a bit scratchy + bassy but you won't hear those issues in the final version, all mixing was redone.

No AI is used in my music, no AI will ever be used in my music. That also means I never use AI stem separation, AI mastering tools, or any other "little helpers" that producers use and try to act sneaky about it. No AI means NO AI. I cut my samples and loops in an old version of Audacity. All my art is drawn first and then traced using vectors in Inkscape.
