Music Forms presents SURTARANG in this episode. Surtarang, where sur means sound and tarang means wave, was born from the desire to create immersive soundscapes for yoga practice. But that was just the beginning. The project soon evolved into a band that wanted to share its music with a wider audience, merging oriental traditions with modern electronic sound. Drawing inspiration from Indian classical music, Surtarang blends authentic instruments such as the sitar, tabla, saz, and darbuka with elements of EDM, trance, and dub. Mystical vocals and performed mantras guide the listener through an experience that is not only sonic but deeply emotional and spiritual.  The mix they created for the Music Forms series features original tracks from their albums Yatra and Duniya, recorded in their home studio. Behind the sound are Hanka Łubieńska on vocals and electronics, Eryk Nowacki on sitar and saz, and Łukasz Jasiak on tabla, darbuka, electronics, and production. Let Surtarang’s waves of sound carry you into a state of resonance and reflection.

My mom influenced a lot of my Latin music from Salsa, Merengue and Cumbia. My Cousin introduced me to California love when I was 8 years old.

My childhood best friend introduce me to Reggaeton in 2001. Played some Bass in High school.
I Interned for Azdef Production Group LLC in KC doing nightlife events, fashion shows, and community gathering events as well. Was introduced to JT Quick and Dj Irie in KC around 2013.

Did events in PDX ZJ Kenzo in 2018 until the Pandemic, then I picked up Dj’ing with my Denon MC4000 during the shutdown. I just don’t hear the music I wanted to hear when we out to events so I decided to play my own mix instead.

I’m a full-time engineer, but I’ve been making music for 40-plus years. I studied jazz drums and Spanish guitar, and now I make music as both producer and guitar player.

I love instrumental rock and hip-hop and electronic music — especially when they start to overlap. To me, music should share electricity, and have a dynamic, stratified blend of styles.

I use Ableton DAW, add Moog and Arturia synthesizers, play guitar, and dive head over heels into the creative process. I really treasure the ancient power of music.

Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Anjunadeep music are some of my main influences.
