The story of Michael Peterson, the mysterious death of his wife Kathleen Peterson, and the subsequent investigation, trial, and fallout on their family has challenged and fascinated audiences for years, starting with the 2004 true crime documentary series by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade and now with HBO Max's "The Staircase." Written by Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn, with Campos directing six out of the eight episodes, the series has garnered critical acclaim for its performances and the exhausting detail which went into the research behind one of the most puzzled over mysteries of our time. "Black Bird" is a true-crime miniseries on AppleTV+, with two episodes coming out July 8th and the rest debuting on the streaming platform weekly). It stars Taron Egerton as Jimmy Keene, a young convict who is transferred to a maximum-security prison so he can get close to Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) to determine if he's the one behind a series of murders. With his ten-year prison sentence on the line, the closer Jimmy gets to Paul, doubts about the man's innocence not only comes into play but Jimmy's safety as well. The series is adapted from the true-crime memoir "In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption" by James Keene and Hillel Levin and also stars Greg Kinnear, Sepideh Moafi, and Ray Liotta in his final on-screen role as Jimmy Keene's father, Big Jim Keene.
