OpenAI launches new 'canvas' ChatGPT interface tailored to writing and coding projects. OpenAI has introduced a fresh interface called "canvas," designed specifically for hands-on writing and coding tasks. This new feature enhances productivity by allowing users to open a dedicated workspace next to their usual chat window. Users can now generate and edit content without the need for repetitive prompts, making it easier and more efficient to tackle larger projects in segments. 

OpenAI closes funding at one hundred fifty-seven billion dollar valuation, as Microsoft, Nvidia, and SoftBank join the round. OpenAI has successfully raised six point six billion dollars in its latest funding round, bringing its valuation to a whopping one hundred fifty-seven billion dollars. Notably, Thrive Capital led the investment, with major contributions from tech giants Microsoft and Nvidia, reflecting strong confidence in OpenAI's future. This funding round is particularly interesting as it includes a sizable revolving credit line, enabling greater flexibility for OpenAI to pursue its ambitious projects.

College students used Meta’s smart glasses to dox people in real time. In a concerning demonstration at Harvard University, students revealed how Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses can be used to gather personal information in real-time. By utilizing the glasses' livestreaming capabilities, they matched captured faces with public databases, revealing names and addresses. This project, aptly named I-XRAY, has sparked significant discussions about privacy in the age of facial recognition technology and the potential misuse of such tools.

In quick hits, Google has started integrating ads into its AI-powered Overviews and Lens search tools, allowing mobile users in the United States to see relevant advertisements beneath AI-generated content. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s video generator Sora has lost its co-lead, Tim Brooks, who has jumped ship to join Google DeepMind and focus on video generation technologies.

Harvard Students Expose Privacy Risks of Smart Glasses, Inflection AI Partners with Intel for New Enterprise Solutions

Hello and welcome to AI Tech News Today. I’m Aurora, here with my co-host Isabelle. Today is October ninth, two thousand twenty-four, and we have some exciting developments in the world of artificial intelligence to share with you. Let’s dive right in!

First up, ai pioneers receive Nobel (but issue warning). Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of A-I,” and fellow scientist John Hopfield have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their foundational work in artificial neural networks. These networks mimic how our brains process information and now power technologies like facial recognition and disease diagnosis. Hinton expressed both surprise and honor, yet also shared his growing concerns about the rapid development of A-I and the potential dangers it brings. He stated, “We don’t know what it’s like to have things smarter than us,” urging caution as we move forward.

Next, uber drivers get A-I support! Uber has announced an upcoming A-I assistant powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o to assist drivers in transitioning to electric vehicles. Launching in early twenty twenty-five in the United States, the assistant will offer personalized information, such as local charging stations and government incentives. By twenty twenty-five, Uber intends to expand the assistant’s capabilities to include verbal interactions, all in an effort to support its goal of becoming a zero-emissions ride-sharing service by twenty forty.

Meanwhile, adobe shields creators from A-I. Adobe is unveiling a new app called “Content Authenticity,” designed to provide content credentials for creators. This app will protect users' intellectual property and allow them to opt out of having their work used for A-I training with ease. It promises integration with various creative platforms, enabling a safeguard against unauthorized exploitation of artistic work.

Finally, openai inks another major content deal. OpenAI has partnered with Hearst Communications to license content from numerous publications, including major magazines like Esquire and Cosmopolitan. This deal aims to bolster the training of OpenAI’s models while also addressing copyright concerns. This is just one of the many similar partnerships OpenAI is cultivating to expand its content pool and capabilities.

Nobel Prize for AI Pioneers Hinton and Hopfield Comes with a Cautionary Message; Uber and Adobe Unveil Innovative AI Solutions

On this week’s Priorities Podcast, Chad Marlow, senior policy counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union, says that the broad use of facial recognition technology by New Orleans police extends even beyond endangering the city’s residents, but invites outside actors to take advantage of its surveillance environment. The police, which were recently revealed to have been using facial recognition against city policy, are now seeking broad approval to use the tech, in part as a response to a recent jailbreak. Marlow says the proposal is not only an overreaction to the rare jailbreak event, but potentially a support to the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation policies and anti-protestor actions. “This is the situation that the New Orleans City Council needs to realize,” he says. “If they set up this system in their city, they can not insulate it from these other bad actors.”

Lawmakers in New Orleans are set to consider a proposal at the end of the month from police that would allow broad use of facial recognition technology during investigations. The proposal comes after an investigation by The Washington Post last month that showed police have already been using the tech against current city policy.

Bill Kehoe, Washington’s chief information officer, said that when funding from the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program ends, state governments will have to collaborate more closely with their municipalities. The grant money, he said, has been key to efforts to bolster local cybersecurity.

After an extensive effort last year to examine her state’s technological shortcomings, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued an executive order that will rearrange the state’s IT efforts and place a greater emphasis on cybersecurity. The order requires the state's IT division to reform as the Department of Shared Administrative Services, Office of State Technology.
