Clobberin' Time - The Thing

Michael Mann helped create the 80’s neon-noir & pastel music video aesthetic in TV and films with Miami Vice,Thief and Manhunter. Obviously this would lead to his 1992 movie adaptation of The Last of the Mohicans, a very dull and nigh-unreadable 19th Century adventure romance novel by James Fenimore Cooper. It’s a costume drama set during the French and Indian War starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Hawkeye, a white dude raised by the Mohicans who gets embroiled in the conflict to save the woman he loves (Madeleine Stowe) from becoming collateral damage. With gorgeous forested vistas, well-staged action, and a sweeping score by Trevor Jones, this one is a weird passion project for Mann, to be sure.  But it did surprisingly well at the box office, so I guess that’s something.  So stay alive, no matter what occurs… we will podcast about it for you!

Den første familie får en ny start

Vi lavede en hurtig overflyvning af Superman (det der på nudansk hedder en 101) i forbindelse med den nye film, og da den nye MCU-udgave af Fantastic Four også virker som en form for genstart, så var det oplagt at gøre det samme for den første, største og bedste af alle Marveltegneserier.

Men først en lille spoiler-fri anmeldelse...

Den nye MCU-film, nummer 37 i rækken, er på mange måder forskellig fra de 36 første i både tone, stil og form.

The Fantastic Four var den tegneserie, som startede selve Marvel-universet tilbage i starten af 60’erne, og denne nye filmudgave af Stan Lee og Jack Kirbys grundlæggende klassiker er også på mange måder starten på noget nyt og et håb om genfødsel.

Matt Shakman er instruktør, og sammen med Pascal, Kirby, Moss-Bachrach og Quinn – som spiller henholdsvis Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm og Johnny Storm, står han i spidsen for en film, der i høj grad lykkes med sin mission om fornyelse.

Vi er på Jord-828, og altså ikke den kendte MCU-jord, hvor vores fire helte er de eneste superhelte og hyldes som globale superstjerner.

På denne parallelverden er vi tilbage i 60’erne, i en fuldstændig fantastisk og overvældende retro-teknologisk udgave, som på mange måder er filmens største succes.

Feige & Co. har lagt de tidligere MCU-films ”realisme” bag sig og fortæller historien om Galactus, den almægtige planetæder, hans bebudede ankomst til Jorden med store, farvestrålende armbevægelser, og det er langt mere tegneserieagtigt, end vi før har set.

Normalt bryder jeg mig ikke om det udtryk, men lige præcis her passer det perfekt til filmen.
Hele skuespillerensemblet er, som altid, virkelig velfungerende, men det er Vanessa Kirby som Sue Storm, Den Usynlige Kvinde, der virkelig skiller sig ud.

Hun er alt andet end usynlig …

Faktisk er hun filmens dramatiske og følelsesmæssige kerne, hvorom alt drejer.

Min største anke (forestil dig nu gatekeeper Søndergårds misbilligende stemme) er, at de har kaijuficeret Galactus, og at slutningen på mange måder ligner alle de andre film i MCU-serien.

Så jeg er ikke helt oppe at ringe, jeg er måske mere lettet end begejstret, men det skal ikke forhindre mig i at anbefale denne film som et yderst underholdende og meget charmerende skridt i den rigtige retning for MCU.

Jeg tror det lykkedes ”To-Gear Søndergård”, at finde et mellemliggende gear, så jeg er spændt hvad du syntes?
