SportsWaves S3E1: New WCC Members, NFL Playoffs and TCU Open Tryouts

This well-known song ranked 4th out of 100 in a poll of Western Writers of America even though it has very little to do with being a cowboy.  Most of the song is sung by a dying cowboy who admits he’s dying because he’s “done wrong.”  Despite a previous life of merit, he became an alcoholic and gambler and received a fatal bullet to his chest (we can only guess the reasons), and he anticipates his death.  However, this reprobate expects the stranger he has chosen to hear his  ‘sad story’ to notify his relatives, and then to plan an elaborate funeral with fifes and drums and at least 32 attendants to join the procession to the graveyard.  Glorifying a life poorly lived and forgiving the dishonourable fellow just because he now seems remorseful should not bestow hero status on the lamenting ‘cowboy.’  But there’s a tendency for people to wallow vicariously in self pity and empathize with a victim of his own undoing.  Nevertheless, my father’s less common melody (similar to “My Home’s in Montana”) puts a tongue in the singer’s cheek to emphasize the song’s incongruities and lessen the elements of tragedy seeking sympathy.

23 - The Cowboy's Lament (The Streets of Laredo) - Hank Sr

This recording comes from the archives of the St Andrews Heritage Museum and Garden and features local voices captured during Memory Box sessions.
In this short piece, Alan Sturrock reflects on his early years behind the scenes at the legendary New Picture House, where he worked as a cinema projectionist from 1978 to 1983. His family’s connection runs even deeper—his grandfather served as manager there in the 1930s, not long after the cinema opened in 1931 (original screenings beginning December 1930).
Alan recalls landing his first job in the projection booth at age 14:
"When I was 14 I got a job in the projection box. My grandfather worked here and was the manager in the 1930s. When I was 14, I got my own job in the projection box."
Designed by local architects Gillespie & Scott, the New Picture House is known for its long, narrow auditorium, balcony, and striking barrel-vaulted ceiling. Its deep stage—with original dressing rooms—hosted amateur theatre for decades. The main proscenium bears the embossed initials NPH, while paintings of St Andrews (including the cinema itself) decorate the circle and stalls.
Screens 2 and 3 were added beneath the balcony (1980s) and in the rear stalls (2002). By 2005 the venue seated 475 (Screen 1), 124 (Screen 2) and 100 (Screen 3). Many original architectural features remain intact, including period doors, signage, and remnants of the former gas-powered secondary lighting system.
The final screening closed in September 2024 for renovation, with a new chapter expected when the venue reopens in early 2026.

Alan Sturrock - New Town Cinema Projectionist

This recording captures memories of the ferry crossings over the River Tay from Fife to Dundee before the Tay Road Bridge opened in 1966.
Ferries have plied the Tay for hundreds of years. In this area there were four main services: Balmerino, Woodhaven, Seamills (Newport) to Dundee, and Ferryport-on-Craig (Tayport) to Broughty Ferry. Competition was fierce, especially between Woodhaven and Seamills, and early ferries were unsafe, irregular, and overcrowded.
After a tragic accident in 1815 claiming 18 lives, regulation and improvements followed. The Tay Ferry Trustees took over in 1819, reducing the number of boats, selecting reliable crews, introducing tickets, and establishing regular sailings.
The introduction of the steamship Union in 1821 transformed the service. By 1822, Newport became the primary crossing point, and new piers designed by Thomas Telford and Robert Stevenson in 1823 improved safety and efficiency.
The final ferry crossing took place on 18 August 1966, shortly after the Tay Road Bridge was opened by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The Scotscraig carried some 200 passengers on the historic last trip, marking the end of an era fondly remembered by locals.

This recording explores the ferry ships that crossed the River Tay from Fife to Dundee before the Tay Road Bridge opened in 1966.
From the first steamboat Union (1821–1836) to the last ferry Scotscraig (1951–1966), the Tay ferries evolved from wooden paddle steamers to diesel-powered vessels with Voith-Schneider propellers, designed to carry both passengers and vehicles safely across the often treacherous river.
Notable ferries include:
Union – first steamship, double-hulled wooden paddle steamer
Fifeshire (1858–1929) – first with a deck saloon, served 71 years
Forfarshire (1861–1893) – charter vessel, later served on the Forth and in WWI
Dundee (1875–1917) – first on scene at Tay Bridge Disaster
B L Nairn, Abercraig, Scotscraig (1929–1966) – later diesel ferries with car decks and advanced maneuverability
Passengers could travel on deck or in saloons, with tickets ranging from 1d to season passes. Weather conditions often tested the crews, from fog and storms to ice floes, and passengers often recall standing on deck in awe at the raw power of the river.
The Fifies remain a cherished memory for locals and visitors alike—providing both a practical transport link and a scenic escape from city life.

Ferry To Dundee before the Road Bridge

This recording brings together memories of the ferries that crossed the River Tay from Fife to Dundee, capturing voices from local people who travelled, worked, or had family connections to the service before the Tay Road Bridge opened in 1966.
For hundreds of years, ferries linked communities on both sides of the river. Early sailboats were often overcrowded, irregular, and unsafe, with fares changing daily and crossings delayed until boats were full. Following a tragic accident in 1815, regulation improved safety, with the Tay Ferry Trustees introducing reliable crews, regular sailings, and tickets.
The arrival of the first steamboat, Union (1821), marked the start of a new era. Subsequent ferries—Fifeshire, Forfarshire, Dundee, B L Nairn, Abercraig, Scotscraig—evolved from wooden paddle steamers to diesel-powered vessels capable of carrying passengers, vehicles, and even livestock. Many had saloons and deck promenades; passengers often preferred the fresh air of the upper deck, walking for exercise or simply enjoying the view.
The ferries faced all kinds of weather—fog, storms, snow, ice floes—and yet remained a lifeline for commuters, pleasure travellers, and locals. The final crossing on 18 August 1966 aboard the Scotscraig marked the end of an era, shortly after the Tay Road Bridge opened.
These recordings preserve the memories, stories, and sounds of the Tay ferries, keeping alive the voices and experiences of generations who knew the river before it was bridged.

Remembering the Ferries and Boats on the Tay River

Our Sonic Museum project will build an audio collection highlighting the cultural, human, and natural wealth, history, and diversity of communities across North East Fife and the East Neuk – a digital storehouse of land, sea and people stories. The Sonic Museum will allow collaborations with heritage, community groups and arts organisations, encourage community involvement, and allow people to learn new skills, produce podcasts, write, perform and explore their creativity.

Recent funding from the Community Learning and Development Device Fund managed by SCVO has led the charity to develop a new initiative called The Sonic Museum. A field recording lending resource (comprising 12 professional digital field recording kits) allows communities to explore the impact of sound on our lives, capture memories, nature soundscapes, songs and sonic postcards. Four pilots are underway with the Youth Ambassadors affiliated with Balmerino, Gauldry, Kilmany and Logie Community Council, St Andrews Heritage Museum and Garden, and volunteers from Kilmany Parish Hall in the remote village of Rathillet and the Hamlet of Collessie. 

We have also started a collaboration with the Fife Writes Charity, a peer support group for published and unpublished writers. This new collaboration will further enhance the Sonic Museum's content, allowing members to record spoken word, short stories, poetry, and audio plays that bring landscape, history, and heritage to life.
