THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Feline fraternizing and archival ACTION!

What started as a story about an unsanctioned mission to rescue 25 stray cats from the streets of Qatar (where cats equal the entire country's human population!) turned into a meditation on compassion, identity, and belonging. Filmmaker Mye Hoang takes us behind the scenes of her moving documentary 25 CATS FROM QATAR, sharing what it taught her — about animals, people, and the power of small acts of care and kindness.

I'm joined with my friend and one of the smartest, most creative guys I know Paul Scheuring to chat through the idea of this film and the possibilities of this adventure!

All I can say right now is that I am very excited to move on from the pre-production "thinking-things-through" phase of this project to the "go out and do it" phase next week as me and a bunch of close friends journey across Eastern Iowa.

#417: Introducing our Upcoming Iowa Adventure Film Project!!

It has been 23 years since the release of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's genre re-defining film "28 Days Later," which has received quite a devoted following over the years. Now, the director and writer have reunited to deliver "28 Years Later," a post-apocalyptic horror film that continues from "28 Weeks Later" (2007) and stars a new cast of characters played by Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Alfie Williams, and Jack O'Connell. Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle has also returned to shoot the film, predominantly using the iPhone (maintaining a consistent look with how audiences experienced the first Canon XL1 digital video-shot film in 2002), and it will kickstart a new trilogy of films with "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" being directed by Nia DaCosta, to come next. After viewing the first 28 minutes of the film, Academy Award-winner Danny Boyle was kind enough to spend some time in the Sony offices in New York speaking with me about his work and experience making the anticipated sequel, which you can listen to below. Interview With "28 Years Later" Director Danny Boyle

"From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina" (or just "Ballerina" for short) is the fifth film in the "John Wick" franchise, serving as a spin-off set between the events of "John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum" (2019) and "John Wick: Chapter 4" (2023). It is the first installment not to be directed by Chad Stahelski, with action director Len Wiseman taking over the reins and featuring Ana de Armas in a new role while Keanu Reeves, Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick (in his final screen appearance before his untimely death), and Ian McShane reprise their roles from the franchise. Wiseman was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Interview With "From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina" Director Len Wiseman

Audacious, trailblazer stories need enterprising visionaries to tell them. This tie between compelling film and skillful director seamlessly weave together in the novel, five-part, Disney+ docuseries, “Harlem Ice.” Harlem Ice is the delightfully inspiring, feel-good film chronicling the lives of a bevy of black and brown teen girl ice skaters of the “Figure Skating in Harlem” organization. Brooklyn-based documentarian SAMANTHA KNOWLES is the young, African American, award winning, filmmaker phenom appointed to craft this first-of-its-kind adventure. 

The Sidebar by NYABJ's SONJA D. GRACY talks with Knowles, a DOC NYC 40 Under 40 List 2023 and “NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Directing in A Documentary Series" recipient, about her work on the Harlem Ice film co-produced by Oscar-winning film director Ron Howard and ABC TV broadcaster Robin Roberts. In this podcast, Knowles shares her vision for the docuseries' creative arc that propels the figure skating organization’s ice access beginnings to its ice-skater mentorships of others across the globe. Knowles also divulges why she squarely centers her art on profiling the plight and progress of African Americans.

Academy Award-nominated composer John Powell, who also worked on the trilogy, additionally returned to compose the score for the film.
