This week on College Town Talk, Jonathan and Shan are joined by Maria Baltazar, a two-time Tennessee Tech graduate and former local elementary school teacher who now serves as the new recruitment specialist in Tech’s Office of Access, Belonging and Community Outreach. Maria shares about being a first-generation college graduate and the sacrifices that her immigrant parents made to equip her for success in life. Then, we’re joined by Damon “Dee” Prince, a Tennessee Tech alumnus and community leader who was named to Cookeville Lifestyle’s inaugural “Most Influential People” list. Dee tells us about the long road that led to his college degree, the importance of mentorship, and his heart for community service.

Christopher Krywenko-Real, a 20-year-old first generation college student, shares his journey as he navigates life at Rowan University, where he is pursuing a degree in Sociology. His passion for education extends beyond personal achievement, he aims to use his studies to help other Hispanic individuals, particularly in the fields of social work and school counseling. Christopher hopes his story will inspire others, especially within his community, to continue their educational pursuits and make a positive impact on those around them.

ULYZ & YNGACE - THINKING (2020 vs 2025 EP)

I decided to go to college because I felt I needed to build stability for myself. Growing up, my parents divorced when I was seven, and I lived with my mom on a single income. We were often living paycheck to paycheck, and I missed out on a lot of things because we couldn’t always make ends meet. For me, college became the way to create a foundation where I wouldn’t have to depend on anyone else.

One of the toughest parts of being a first-generation student was managing financial aid. Since my parents didn’t attend college, they couldn’t assist me with FAFSA, so I struggled year after year to figure it out myself. It was overwhelming, and at times I felt a lot of pressure to succeed because I was given an opportunity that many in my family didn’t have.

During my first semester, my grandmother became very sick, and I helped care for her while managing my classes. It was one of the hardest periods of my life. I was only eighteen, calling doctors, learning medical terms I didn’t understand, and visiting her at the care facility after class. She passed away at the end of that semester, and it nearly led me to drop out. But somehow, I made the Dean’s List instead. That experience showed me how resilient I truly am, and it gave me perspective: life is too short to give up on opportunities like this.
