Directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is the biographical thriller film based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin which chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons. 

During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. (Matt Damon) appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world's first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history, ushering in the Atomic Age.

On today’s episode of Girls On Film, Anna Smith talks to four of the women Heads of Department who helped create Oppenheimer. 

Anna speaks to its editor Jennifer Lame (Midsommar, Don’t Worry Darling) about her career, which led her to edit one of the biggest films of 2023. Jennifer shares her instinct-driven approach to her work and reflects on her position as a woman editor.

Next up Anna has a conversation with legendary costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, whose credits include Basic Instinct, Showgirls and Bridgerton. Ellen speaks about her first foray into costume design, hunting for the perfect hat for Oppenheimer, and the joys of putting together costumes for the film’s women characters. 

Finally, Anna speaks with Head of Hair Jaime Leigh McIntosh (Blonde, Babylon) and Head of Makeup and Prosthetics Luisa Abel (Knives Out, Interstellar) about the extraordinary attention to detail required when working in IMAX format, and about the role of the women characters in the Oppenheimer story. 

Oppenheimer is based on the 2006 Pulitzer Prize-winning book 'American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer' by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. It stars Cillian Murphy with an all star supporting cast including Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Robert Downey Jr.  

At the time of writing it was announced that Oppenheimer, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, is up for eight Golden Globes at the 2024 awards.

122: Thunderbolts*

Michael Mann helped create the 80’s neon-noir & pastel music video aesthetic in TV and films with Miami Vice,Thief and Manhunter. Obviously this would lead to his 1992 movie adaptation of The Last of the Mohicans, a very dull and nigh-unreadable 19th Century adventure romance novel by James Fenimore Cooper. It’s a costume drama set during the French and Indian War starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Hawkeye, a white dude raised by the Mohicans who gets embroiled in the conflict to save the woman he loves (Madeleine Stowe) from becoming collateral damage. With gorgeous forested vistas, well-staged action, and a sweeping score by Trevor Jones, this one is a weird passion project for Mann, to be sure.  But it did surprisingly well at the box office, so I guess that’s something.  So stay alive, no matter what occurs… we will podcast about it for you!
