The Animus Winds

The theme for this piece was written as incidental music for the stage play 'Merchant of Venice' but remained unused in the final production. Here it is used as the theme for a set of variations with drum set accompaniment; in the the tradition of medieval pipe and tabour.

This is a cover of a song written by Jay Januzzi and developed by Wild Blue Gypsy (Jay Januzzi, David Noble, Trevor Newcomb, Todd Lanka) in rehearsals 2004 - 2005. The drums, keyboards, and flute parts are based on transcriptions of rehearsal tapes from that time.

“Return to Origins” is inspired by Taiwanese aboriginal music, such as nose flutes, especially Paiwan tribe’s Pakulalu double nose flutes with their polyphony and drone (similar to pedal point), as well as traditional children’s rhymes. The polyphony later develops and transforms to multiphonics. Moreover, the piece also brings us back to the history of flute in the middle East, such as Ney (replicated by flute without mouthpiece while blowing the flute vertically) and Neanderthal flute. This composition specifically focuses on the expansion and development of musical cell divisions and micromolecules.

“Return to Origins” is commissioned, premiered and dedicated to the fine Taiwanese flutist Cheng-Yu Wu, funded by the National Culture & Arts Foundation in Taiwan.

曲目解說｜

《返樸歸真 Return to Origins》這個作品是啟發於台灣本土原住民傳統的雙管鼻笛，如來自阿美族、布農族、鄒族、排灣族、魯凱族、平埔族等的鼻笛音樂，特別是 Pakulalu 為排灣重要樂器，因排灣人認為，氣息乃生命的要素。「返璞歸真」也是為了記念 89 歲的口鼻笛國寶大師許坤仲先生二個月前辭世所創作的作品。除此之外，「返璞歸真」還運用了世界上最古老的樂器－笛子－60,000 年歷史的尼安德塔人的笛子 Neanderthal flute，和中東納伊笛（Ney）所發聲的原理、及其音色、微分音階、技巧與特色等等，將長笛帶回歷史的隧道。

在作品的鋪陳方面，亦回歸到作曲之根本，所運用的方式為最基本的動機發展，著重於細胞分裂之延續與延伸及研發，而不是花俏取寵、故事背景詳述的作曲手法方式。真真正正的回到作曲的本源及初衷。在這首作品中的每一個音、想法、技巧等等都有連串性的關聯，由一而終。

「返璞歸真」中另外值得一提的部分是氣聲的部分詞彙來自於臺灣阿美族的童謠 O Cima Kiso 「你是誰」，隱喻著對自我的省思。

Return to Origins

Escape Cycles was inspired by addiction, healing, and the cycles that result which have an immeasurable impact on those affected and their loved ones. It was commissioned by Jenni Shanahan, and is dedicated to John, who learned to pick himself up again.

WINDRUNNER

John Tabacco is an American composer, singer songwriter, producer, recording engineer, multi instrumentalist and graphic artist. He has engineered /mixed and mastered music for hundreds of New York recording artists as well as projects released on BMG: The Kemelions, RCA: Faze, Rampage/Rhino: Rhett Forrester, Columbia: Rebbie Jackson, Rykodisc : Bob Marley, Columbia: Chris Jasper, Electra: Sonia Dada and Nickleodeon’s Are You Afraid Of The Dark? He is the CEO of It Iz What It Iz Music Publishing which currently holds over 750 songs in its catalog. He has been an associate producer for IndiMusic TV and hosts a bi-weekly radio program (CLAM RADIO) on college radio WUSB.fm since 1999. He is currently the head of A&R at Modern Voices Digital Distribution.

His musical background consists of extensive study of orchestration with noted 20th century composer John Lessard, harmony with the late electronic music maverick Bulent Arel, and composition with Stony Brook University professor Peter Winkler. He received his BA in Music from Stony Brook University in 1983. 

Like an unfolding musical diary / puzzle, Tabacco’s music and art are constantly being re-worked, juxtaposed and intertwined. His style is a melding of pop - jazz -rock - avant garde / aleatory, classical and comedy.  He has been recording his music non stop since 1979.

Of note: In 1989 the satirical, absurd house song "Go House Yourself" co-written by Tabacco, Pati and DiMauro reached position 39 on Billboard's dance chart. 

In 2014 Tabacco signed a record deal with Texas, indie label, Muffin Records. They released his CD “Unfulfilled Shopping Carts Syndrome” internationally.

Minuano is a music project led by Japanese musician Mr. Takero Ogata, featuring Ms. Kaori Sakakibara (from Lamp) as the lead singer. Crafting a sound influenced by MPB, jazz, soft rock, and city pop, yet with a unique twist.

Martyn Jackson studied flute, saxophone and piano at the Royal College of Music London and has for over thirty years pursued a career as a performer and music educator. Recently returning to serious composition he has written the music associated with his project 'Ancient Stones of Kernow' which focuses on the prehistory of the far west of Cornwall. He works from his music studio in St. Ives which has recording facilities and is equipped with Logic Pro X and Sibelius software along with Kontakt and Vienna Symphonic sound libuaries, with a full size Oxygen 88 keyboard.
