She will explain suitcase living and treatment leading to a hopeful mindset with an emphasis on trauma informed care.  She will give examples of how to add hope to the interactions that forensic nurses have with patients.

Dr. Christina Vela, CEO of St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, has 20+ years of human and social service experience that includes administering foster care, homeless, and supportive services to children, transition age-youth, and their families.

She has worked at the non-profit level as the Executive Director and the Chief Program Officer for St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, a Manager for the Clark County Department of Family Services, Social Services Program Specialist for the State of Nevada and a Program Specialist for the Federal Administration for Children and Families-Children’s Bureau in Washington DC.  More recently, Christina has been the Coordinator for the State of Nevada Coalition to Prevent the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children. Christina holds her Doctorate in Public Policy and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She is a proud alumnus of Emerge Nevada, Leadership Las Vegas Class of 2013, Jameson Fellows and Clark County Leadership Academy.

In this Bell Work Talk, Rachel Lapp will discuss harm reduction as it pertains to Forensic Nursing Practice.

Rachel is a forensic nurse from Chicago, Illinois. She has been a registered nurse for 11 years. Her background is in emergency and trauma nursing. She began her journey into forensic nursing 7 years ago when she decided to become a sexual assault nurse examiner. Rachel is a board-certified emergency nurse, board-certified trauma nurse, licensed trauma nurse specialist, and is a nationally certified adult/adolescent sexual assault nurse examiner.

Rachel is currently the Forensic Nurse Examiner Program Manager for Advocate Health’s Central Chicagoland Region. Rachel oversees three urban hospital sites and leads a team of nearly 60 forensic nurses who care for patients who are survivors of sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence. Rachel has been a member of the Academy of Forensic Nursing since 2018. She is currently serving on the Academy of Forensic Nursing’s board of directors and is the chair of the Harm Reduction Special Interest Group (SIG).

Episode 65: Harm Reduction in the context of Forensic Nursing

There is an international “gold standard” for investigating suspicious deaths — it’s called the Minnesota Protocol.

Adopted by the United Nations in 1989 and 1991, the Minnesota Protocol outlines best practice for death investigations, particularly when government agents may have done the killing or neglected the duty to investigate.

Forensic investigators have used the Minnesota Protocol to exhume mass graves in Peru (pictured), identify the remains of anti-apartheid activists who disappeared in South Africa, and convict General Efraín Ríos Montt of genocide in Guatemala. 

Today the protocol is being translated into Ukrainian for use by forensic specialists, at the urging of the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions. The Special Rapporteur is promoting global implementation of the protocol to address human rights violations.

Minnesota lawyers and medical examiners volunteered to draft the protocol in partnership with international experts in the 1980s. The pro bono lawyers’ committee went on to become The Advocates for Human Rights, which relies on more than 800 volunteers. 

A new Human Rights Archive at the University of Minnesota highlights the state’s contributions to the human rights movement and preserves early drafts of the Minnesota Protocol.

Forensics (Definitive Edition)

In this Bell Work Talk, Dr. Barol will help us to reach past the overshadowing diagnosis of autism to talk about how to respond to the neurodiverse/autistic child who has experienced trauma. 

Dr. Barol has devoted the past 49 years to serving and supporting individuals with intellectual, developmental, and neurological differences (ID) who have experienced trauma and, as a result, often exhibit challenging behaviors and co-occurring mental health issues. 

Dr. Barol received the National Association for Dual Diagnosis (NADD) Earl L. Loschen, MD Award for clinical practice in 2020. She has been the co-director of the Capacity Building Institute for Pennsylvania for the past eight years. Dr. Barol consults regularly in both the U.S. and internationally.

Horizon Unfolding Ambient Electronic

In this Bell Work Talk, Nancy Blaney and Claire Coughlin of the Animal Welfare Institute will discuss the connection between human and animal welfare and implications for the practice of Forensic Nursing. By incorporating questions about animals into their work, practitioners can identify people and pets at risk, positively impact service engagement, and make the most of available resources.

Claire Coughlin: Claire Coughlin (she/her) has a master’s degree in human development and family studies and extensive experience in both social services and animal advocacy. For over a decade, she specialized in evidence-based education and support services for children and families impacted by abuse and neglect. She now serves as the director of the Companion Animals Program for the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) and oversees AWI’s work on the link between animal maltreatment and human violence, including the Safe Havens for Pets program which supports domestic violence survivors with pets.

Nancy Blaney has advocated on behalf of animals for more than 40 years and is currently Director of Government Affairs at the Animal Welfare Institute. She works with federal and state legislators and regulators, the law enforcement community, veterinarians, and other stakeholder groups to improve animal welfare, the prosecution of animal cruelty crimes, and public awareness of the relationship between animal abuse and other forms of violence, particularly all forms of family violence. Nancy serves on a variety of advisory bodies and has co-authored several articles and chapters.

ÆSTR has established her hybrid DJ set signature : a foundation in Industrial Techno, with rhythmic Noise, Hypnotic, Dark Techno and the groove of EBM. Constantly evolving, she explores polyrhythms and multi-decks to deepen the narrative. Her artistic background infused her dj performances : tension, energy, and letting go combine, sculpting time.
