'Forget You' Live At Chromozone Showcase Room April 2024

The title of this song can lead someone to come up with a number of different ways it could be used, or a bunch of different reasons why someone would say it. I wanted to address as many of those ways as possible, while also keeping the song true to what I’ve experienced, since that’s what I try to prioritize when I write music. Keeping the songs genuine and honest has always been a big goal of mine, even if it may sting a bit to write, record and post lyrics. Cause that’s the reality of the situations I talk about, these things sting people, but not a lot of people talk about how much it can sting.

So the event that really inspired me to make this song was a video I watched of an animated story of these two people who had been in a relationship for a couple years, then the girlfriend gets into an accident which results in a coma. She wakes up after 2-3 years and finds that her boyfriend moved on and is engaged to another girl. This leads to the girl having a hard time moving on from this guy, and also finding love again since she doesn’t think she’ll find a guy who was as good to her as her ex was. After watching that video, I was able to relate to the girl since I had gotten out of a not so good relationship not too long after that. I did my best to recall how I felt after I broke up with her and started writing a list of emotions, and things that I thought about before, during and after the break up process. The one thing I thought of (that is also my favorite lyric in the song) is that since she was my first girlfriend, is if every relationship after this is going to be like this, and if I’m going to go through this same process with every girlfriend moving forward. Also, since it was also my only relationship, that means I don’t have anything else to base a relationship off of, so this created a lot of doubt in me about wanting to enter the dating scene again, because I didn’t know if I wanted to deal with it again if every girl was like this.

So after all that, I did my best to forget this person and everything we did together, but I realized that it’s really hard to forget someone when you have so many things that remind you of them, whether they are good or not. Some examples I talk about are when you share a song you both like and a place you both went. When those things come up again, you can’t help but remember when you experienced them with that person, which leaves you with this feeling of frustration that you wish you didn’t have to go through. The icing on the cake is that when you’re not able to delete those memories from your brain, makes the situation ten times harder to deal with.
