so stretch, black-fingered dusk, and smother sun
beneath horizon's suffocating shroud,
malign crepuscules creep from vision's fringes
to bludgeon heads, evangelize the night,
light screams, as darkness crowds the victim day,
and sight is drowned in Lethic pools of shade.
dement the mind to corners, crawlspace exit,
but heaven just a dingy closet, spidered.
phenomena derange and dwindle now,
the gaudy furnishings of worlds, lost time,
belated cosmos' husk and periscopes
from distant prison's falling ceaseless falling—
remember that, once more before the end:
the terror, desperate holds that slip away,
the life you never had, the presaged death,
it all comes back but fading fast like you.
better this way, eyes shut and one last breath,
it's done, things come to ground at last, forget.

There's a song I like to sing when I've been too long on the road.
Every time I sing it, I start thinking what I'm gonna do when I get there.
I might hunker down and read a book, or maybe take a nap.
Maybe rearrange my closet, I might just sit by the fire, when I get there.
But the one thing I won't do is think about the times we had,
'Cause every time I think about 'em I'll start crying.

So I won't be thinking 'bout the way your eyes glowed in the sun,
Or the way your hair laid softly on your shoulder when I get there.
And I won't be thinking 'bout the way your smile could light the room.
With so many things to think about, I'll be thinking 'bout them when I get there.

So when you close your eyes tonight you can sleep just fine,
Knowing I'm not thinking 'bout you.

And if by chance you cross my mind, it won't linger long,
I've got more important things to think about when I get there.
