Everything Is Police is a new book by Tia Trafford, who argues that institutional and interpersonal policing have been central to colonial modernity, the result of which is a situation where we cannot practically experience or even imagine worlds free from policing. Trafford is joined here in conversation with Melayna Lamb.



Tia Trafford is reader in philosophy and design at University for the Creative Arts in London. They are author of Everything Is Police and The Empire at Home, and coeditor of Alien Vectors.

Melayna Lamb is lecturer at the University of Law, UK, and author of A Philosophical History of Police Power.

Dans la première partie, j’ai suggéré que la fascination pour le fait divers s’explique par l’empathie, comme caractère fondamental de l’homme. Quand un fait divers se produit, il heurte notre mode de fonctionnement empathique, et nous ne pouvons pas nous empêcher de regarder de l’autre côté du miroir. Ainsi, plutôt que de faire écho à notre part sombre, la fascination pour les faits divers révèlerait l’importance de l’empathie dans nos sociétés.


Mais l’empathie est-elle le seul ressort de notre rapport aux faits divers ?
Le procès n'est-il pas le passage au temps de la raison ?


Dans cet épisode, on va s’intéresser à une dimension plus rationnelle de la philosophie du fait divers.

On the Essay as a Way of Life: Foucault, Montaigne and Writing as Self-(trans)formation (Kurt Borg)

This week, we continue our conversation with Eyal Rozmarin. If belonging is a powerful force compelling us to identify with groups, it follows that our collectives must imprint themselves on the foundation of our very subjectivity. Drawing on the work of Foucault and Giorgio Agamben, Rozmarin paints a portrait of personhood that is always in conflict between the warm acceptance of the State, and the terror of being cast out into the wilderness as bare life. But what if we were to transcend the Self? What does a liberated Subject look like? An ideology that positions the Self as always in transition would only echo what we should already know as therapists- that identity is transient, the Self is expansive, and that our borders, no matter how much we build walls, are permeable.

From jazz clubs to cosplay festivals, from Springsteen concerts to VR raves, we gather in narrative worlds that pulse with meaning—online and offline, commercial and sacred. These are not just fandoms. They are immersive rituals. They are identity spaces.

🎭 In my latest essay, I explore how these multiverses periodically materialize in the real world, synchronizing digital swarms into shared human experience.
With insights from Foucault, Flusser, Bauman, Ingarden, and Tobaccowala, the piece connects philosophy, marketing, and presence in a fluid age.

In «Geschichte der Gouvernementalität II» beschreibt Foucault eine spezifische Regierungsweise in der westlichen Spätmoderne, die Macht nicht in erster Linie über Verbote, Gewalt und Sanktionen ausübt, sondern durch «produktive Techniken» – beispielsweise durch die Disziplinierung und Normierung von Körpern, Subjekten, Wissen und Diskursen. Das «Individuum» wird dabei in seine kleinsten Bestandteile und Bewegungsabläufe zerlegt und somit zum Gegenstand einer «Biopolitik», in der das Leben selbst Einzug in das Regieren erhält.

Wie übertragen sich staatliche Regierungsweisen auf Subjektivierungsweisen des Selbst? Ist Freiheit eine Zumutung? Inwiefern ist Foucault Vordenker heutiger Bewegungen, die als identitätspolitisch gelten? Und hat der späte Foucault tatsächlich mit dem Neoliberalismus sympathisiert, wie ihm zuweilen vorgeworfen wird?
