From the soul of 577 Records comes an epic collaboration from experimental masters, pianist Matthew Putman, bassist Hill Greene, and drummer Francisco Mela (who also plays the whistle in this one).  It’s synergy like never before.  The sounds you’ll hear in Believe That Was Me could only have been achieved by this specific combination of artists, setting, and time.
Although Greene and Putman have been collaborating since 2017, this release marks the first time Mela and Putman have played together – though you’d never know it, thanks to their intense chemistry.  This extraordinary album doesn’t only gracefully bridge the gap between intense melodies and classic avant-garde energy; it takes many trips over that bridge and back to unlock an existential experience.
The musicians were shook when they first heard the playback.  They almost didn’t recognize their own enviable talents!  And in that moment, the album title was born.  Believe That Was Me isn’t just an observation; it’s a reckoning.
These three men have roots buried in the heart of the 577 Records community.  They’ve all been a part of it for over a decade (since 2009 for Putman).  Their new album was recorded at the label’s studio in Brooklyn, home of the New York Forward Fest (NYFF).  There’s no doubt that Believe That Was Me was influenced by the enchanting location and lingering high vibes of this community of musicians and their supporters.  Even the cosmic sounds of NYFF’s iconic magical piano were injected into the recording through Putman’s fingers.
“We are proud to release this on vinyl and take our listeners into an aural adventure,” the trio says.  “The spiritual world is accessible through sound!  Here’s the proof!”
On September 5th, 200 first-edition LPs and 100 first-edition CDs will be available.  You can also enjoy it as a digital download from that date forward.

I formed Turbulence in 2015 as I started to assemble players for the Leap of Faith Orchestra. Turbulence, the extended horn section for the Orchestra (along with guests on other instruments), also records and performs as an independent unit. As if this writing in 2025, we have recorded over 60 albums on Evil Clown with greatly varied ensembles.  All the smaller Evil Clown bands are really more about a general approach, rather than a specific set of musicians.  A session gets credited to Turbulence when it is mostly horn players and the only musician on all of them is me. The sessions range from an early duet with Steve Norton and me (Vortex Generation Mechanisms) to a 5-horn band with bass and two percussionists (Encryption Schemes) to four albums by the side project Turbulence Doom Choir which feature myself, multiple tubas, percussion, electronics, and signal processing and many other configurations.

Recipes for Prediction was planned as a Leap of Faith set to follow up Leap of Faith Probabilistic Notions recorded several weeks ago with a very similar ensemble. Performances are credited to LOF when PEK and Glynis Lomon are both on the session, but Glynis has been moving recently and was unable to make this set, so I repurposed the ensemble for three-horns with bass & drums credited to Turbulence. Probabilistic Notions was a strong performance, and it is interesting to notice how this one is both so similar and so different with just two differences in personal – the missing Glynis and Bob Moores on trumpet instead of Michael Calianone on reeds.  

Both Leap of Faith and Turbulence have done quite a few sessions with three horns, bass and drums (and cello with LOF). I think of this as our Art Ensemble of Chicago model and it is a powerful one. Tight groups of players who know each other’s improvisation languages can engage in very interesting, improvised counterpoint as well as textual composition. John, Bob and I are super-tight in the horn ensemble sections and we also each do a lot of doubling on the percussion and electronic auxiliary instruments fully leveraging the broad palette environment at Evil Clown Headquarters.

With an unwavering passion for music and a career spanning nearly two decades, Blanali is a music producer and live performer who continues to push his own boundaries. Born in Bogota, Colombia, Blanali embarked on his musical journey as a bass player at the age of 18. However, it wasn't long before he delved into the world of synthesisers, samplers, and sequencers, opening up a new realm of creative possibilities.

Blanali's early years saw him emerge as a vibrant force in the underground techno and electronic music scene in Bogota. 577 Records is proud to be celebrating its 24 year anniversary.  The legendary music master Daniel Carter was one of the first people 577 cofounder Federico Ughi met soon after arriving in New York from Italy in 2000, after a brief stint in London.  It was a meeting of like minds and shortly thereafter the two started a series of house concerts at 577 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn, the apartment where Federico was living at the time. The spontaneous nature of the concerts along with the incredible caliber of the deep downtown underground music they were able to present inspired them to bring the unique nature of what they were doing to a wider audience and they founded the label 577 Records to further that mission.

Graphic artist, writer, and just a budding musician.

Playing piano is my daily therapy against stress. That also repels the rodents that attempt to squat my attic in winter !

As an insomniac, I mainly play at night. Each improvisation is like a snapshot of my mood and state of mind of the instant.

I record almost everything I play. From time to time one of these improvisations inspires me enough, and I use it as a basis for a composition.
