TFU Dirty Dozen Vol. 6 – Ash Lee (2008)

This mix was recorded back in 2008 as part of the Dirty Dozen CD series for TFU. It was one of the first curated sets where I really started to explore layering acapellas throughout the mix, something that’s stuck with me ever since. Most of it was mixed on vinyl, with CDJs used for layering vocals. One of the acapellas is even reversed… and somehow it worked.

The sound I was playing leaned into bass-heavy foundations, punchy drums, and a slightly left-field take on what was dominant around that time. I was trying to avoid the obvious records and shape something that felt like my own.

Solid momentum and great energy on the maiden voyage of Rise Ritual at Gelato Vero Caffe. Resident and promoter Thomas Fitzgerald tweaked his more common sound from Sublime Saturdays to make you wanna run around the block like your mama's coming to visit. Slightly more Disco, but don't just take our word for it!

This will be a weekly jam-bo-ree every Wednesday morning from 7 - 9AM. Skip the gym, get your buzz, shake it down, and start your hump day right! This is one of the best places in San Diego to catch an outstanding morning view.

Ash Lee is a Melbourne-based DJ with over two decades experience, shaped by a long-standing connection to vinyl culture and an expansive music library built over time. His approach is rooted in deep musical knowledge and a keen sense of what a room needs, connecting timeless sounds with a modern edge. His sets reflect both a deep respect for the past and an ear for what’s next, effortlessly blending freshness with familiarity.

Ash’s sets are anchored in the foundations of house and disco, shaped by everything from classics and modern reworks to a discerning palette that leans into deeper territory. Depending on the environment, his sound is curated, broadening to include elements of nu disco, funk, balearic and downtempo, always delivered with a clear sense of musical direction and an element of surprise.

His approach is open-format and instinctive, shaped by years of listening, learning, and refining. Each performance draws from extensive experience across club, festival, event, and private settings. Equally comfortable working with vinyl or digital formats, his focus is always on flow, feeling, and creating a lasting connection with the audience.

Artiste et DJ de MAO, je fusionne des genres variés tels que la techno, la house, la musique trance, la musique organique et pop également afin de créer des paysages sonores uniques. Sous l'entité "Otoko", je suis toujours en quête de nouvelles sonorités. Indépendant et autodidacte, je gère chaque aspect de ma carrière, de la production, en passant par la direction artistique jusqu'aux performances live. Mon objectif ? Offrir une expérience musicale immersive et explorer de nouveaux horizons électro. Écoute mes morceaux et rejoins-moi dans ce voyage sonore !

As the son of a professional flamenco singer, Thomas has always been surrounded by music.  Exposure to flamenco influenced him because it has a dynamic range of emotions—from the "deep singing" style of cante hondo, to the more lively alegrias.  He has also worked in the corporate, independent, and online music industry for a number of years.  At one point he was a Content Manager for the Electronic Music genre at MP3.com, where he screened over 500 songs per day.  Exposure to a wide range of music explains the range of genres in his mixes—he uses whatever carries the mood.  From listening to Umm Kulthum's "Enta Omri" in his childhood, to New Wave and  Industrial as a teen, it became difficult for him to stick to one sound. Though vinyl was his original format of choice when he started in the 90s, the use of digital mixing has helped him better form soundscapes to expand your headspace.  Let him play with your moods for a spell.
