Anne Fadiman unpacks her latest essay, “Frog,” a 6,000-word piece about Bunky, her family’s African clawed frog. Although he was easy to care for, this “unpettable pet” raised a number of philosophical and ethical questions about pet ownership. For nearly two decades, Bunky lived inside a too-small aquarium on Fadiman’s kitchen counter, ribbitting for a mate that could never come. Fadiman probes her continued guilt over whether this animal had lived a decent life—after all, you can’t spay or neuter a pet frog. Suffused with this unease, Fadiman’s essay departs from the typically saccharine or sentimental approach to writing about pets and death, respectively. As she explains in this episode, “Death is hard to face, so it’s interesting to face. It’s a literary challenge. And not all deaths are the same.” Bunky’s departure lends lessons on writing, caretaking, connections, confinement—in a word, relationships.

The Ethics Of Pet Ownership

Spring full moon tides are usually much higher and lower turning gentle flowing brackish creeks into rushing rivers. This audio is one hour of outgoing tidal flow's rushing water sounds along with Pig Frogs, Leopard Frogs, a few Green Tree Frogs calling.  Shorebirds, songbirds, crickets and the occasional overhead airplane and nearby fishing boat contribute to the rest of the full moon marsh audio. Recording rushing water audio is challenging however I find the sounds ground me with the earth (after all our bodies are mostly water).  The Pig Frogs are the perfect bass accompaniment while Leopard Frogs call with out their soprano melodies. I hear Red-winged Blackbirds throughout along with a number of shorebirds.  Mole crickets and Southern Field Crickets round out the recording. The St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge is always in earth & wildlife orchestra mode.  Sony PCM M10 recorders, Clippy mics, Windbubbles & dry bags.

I am so grateful for the frogs in my life.  Frog calls can have a soothing and calming effect on many people, most likely due to the fact that the sound frequencies produced by frogs fall within the range of frequencies that can stimulate the body's relaxation response.
When we listen to sounds that fall within this range, our body's natural response is to relax and become calm. This is because these sounds can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for regulating many of the body's rest and relaxation functions, such as slowing down the heart rate and reducing muscle tension.
Additionally, the sound of frogs can also be associated with nature and the outdoors, which can have a calming and grounding effect on our mental state. Being in nature has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety and improve overall well-being. This is one of the reasons Forest Bathing has become so popular in some cultures among those seeking to improve their health.
I personally have immersed myself in as many Nature experiences as I can experience daily.  Nature immersion is key to my good blood pressure & stress control. Listening to frog calls & other wildlife sounds throughout the day and at night have become one of the most important tools I have found to help me navigate living life with a dissected aorta & as a cancer survivor. Shout out to the frogs of the world!
Finally, when in the studio processing frog call audio I often become so relaxed & at peace with my body & surroundings that I have to lay down on the sofa, close my eyes & let nature’s music bathe me in bliss.
This 40 minute audio clip was taken across the East River area of the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge just after sunset.  Recorder set up in the marsh edge. Sony PCM M10, Clippy mics, dry bags & windscreens.
