Championship winning crew chief Chris Lawson joins Davey Segal this week (5:50) to discuss his hot start to the 2023 season with Zane Smith in the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series. He also dives into what sets Smith apart from other drivers he's worked with in the past, his time winning back-to-back K&N Pro Series West championships with Todd Gilliland, the highs and lows of almost winning the East title the same season they won out West, his short-lived racing career and why he opted to make a living in motorsports on the crew chief side of things.

Lawson also discusses his road to Front Row Motorsports and becoming a shot caller in the Truck Series, the personal satisfaction it gave him to see Gilliland advance to the Cup Series with FRM and when he knew that they'd have a legitimate shot at winning the 2022 series title. Plus, details on his reunion this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway with Gilliland, why he prefers the Truck Series to the Cup Series, how he got the nickname "Tic Tac" and more.

Davey also recaps Kyle Larson's Martinsville win, why the short track package continues to underwhelm, what potential changes could be made and previews Talladega. Papa Segal also pays homage to a NASCAR Hall of Famer with the No. 81.

Rookie crew chief Ryan Bergenty joins Davey Segal this week (6:10) to discuss his inaugural foray into full-time crew chiefing in the Cup Series. Coming off the first and only off weekend of the year, Bergenty explains what lies ahead for the No. 38 team at Front Row, how his adjustment to being the shot caller of an entire team has been, his comfort level, leaning on teammates like Travis Peterson and Chris Lawson and how him landing the position actually wound up starting as a joke between he and General Manager Jerry Freeze.

Bergenty also explains why he famously (literally) cut down the walls int he shop, what “Lion Mode” means to him, his racing background beginning in the Northeast that saw stops at Chip Ganassi Racing and Furniture Row Racing, among others, the tricky situation of Todd Gilliland and Zane Smith sharing the No. 38 ride this season and more, including a preview of Nashville Superspeedway this weekend.

Papa Segal pays homage to the No. 90 and Davey briefly previews NASCAR’s trip to the Music City.

Episode 190: Ryan Bergenty

Winner winner Brickyard dinner! Front Row Motorsports crew chief Travis Peterson joins Davey Segal this week to revel in and discuss the No. 34 teams triumphant and dominant Indianapolis Road Course win (5:55). Peterson explains the satisfaction of dominating the race instead of lucking into a win, the nerves he had before and during the race, how small FRM is comparably to some other large teams he's worked with and where/how Michael McDowell stacks up on the long list of drivers and Hall of Famers he's worked with.

Peterson explains the lunch conversation that started it all and why McDowell liked one of his answers to a question, proving himself, doing more with less at Front Row, why the win wasn't a huge surprise, outlook for the playoffs, Watkins Glen this upcoming weekend and more.

Davey also discusses the Verizon 200 more in depth, including the length and time of the race, International drivers' performances and the fierce bubble battle with two races to go before the postseason. He also looks ahead to The Glen and Papa Segal pays homage to a NASCAR Hall of Famer and the No. 97.

Happy Daytona race week! 2021 winner of the Great American Race Michael McDowell joins Davey Segal (7:00) to discuss his mindset heading into the 2024 season, coming off a career-best year that saw him make the playoffs, his relationship with crew chief Travis Peterson and things staying the same on the No. 34 team.

McDowell also chats about the process to get to the closing laps on Sunday, starting weeks (and months) before cars hit the track in Daytona, how the Next Gen car has helped teams like Front Row Motorsports, what his expectations are for the upcoming year and why he feels like he has a lot ahead of him despite being a series veteran who's experienced the highest highs and lowest lows.

Papa Segal also pays homage to Perfect Peter Grigg and Davey previews the opening points-paying weekend of the 2024 season.

Episode 213: Michael McDowell

I was delighted to contribute a soundscape commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the Shipping Forecast being broadcast on the BBC. This audio piece was featured on a special edition of Front Row, and was recorded in front of a live audience at the iconic Cutty Sark in London, adding to the occasion's magnitude.

While researching and exploring artistic concepts for the soundscape, I discovered how important the Shipping Forecast is to many people, and most notably how it helps people in getting to sleep. This notion of the Shipping Forecast serving as the nations lullaby really resonated with me, becoming the central inspiration for shaping my composition.

It was an honour to be a part of this historical moment and to be featured alongside other incredibly talented poets, authors and musicians.
