A rewritten version of "Moon Music" by Coldplay — created for my Grandad’s funeral.

I used to play this piece on the piano, and he’d often say, “What’s that? I like that.”

After his passing, I reworked the song into something personal — a reflection on life, death, and the love that continues after we’re gone.

Thank you to Coldplay for the beautiful original. This version features new lyrics, piano and vocals written and recorded by me, Jack Watkins, as a tribute to the man who meant the world to us.

水曜日と木曜日にパシフィコ横浜でフューネラルビジネスフェアが開催されました。
いつもなら台風シーズンでどちらかの日は来場者数は少ないのです。
とくに去年は少なかった感じがしましたが、今年は出展者も多く、両日お祭り騒ぎだった感じでした。

今、小規模葬儀社が大変苦しい時期を迎えております。
大手があらゆるところに斎場を建ててどんどん追い詰められています。
多死社会だからといって、雨の日のあとのたけのこの如く、こんなに建てていて大丈夫なのかと。
綜合ユニコムの調査によりますと2024年も新たに476棟も建ち、一昨年に続いて式場建設ブーム中です。一昨年は334棟で、2年間で合計810棟です。更に今年、2025年には500棟建つだろうと言われており、より勢いを増しています。

Frank was just two years old when his mother died during the Spanish flu outbreak. He never knew her as “Mum” — only as the quiet figure glimpsed through the crack in the bedroom door, too sick to hold him.

She was buried in Portsmouth, not in a churchyard, but in the loose ground of the streets alongside many others, marked only by wooden crosses.

This piece is about that day — her funeral. Through Frank’s eyes: strangers weeping at makeshift graves, fires lit for purification, rows of coffins waiting for the earth. A city walking over its dead. A boy, too young to grieve, standing in the presence of loss without yet knowing what it meant.

This piece is inspired by the true story of my grandfather’s event noted in his journal. This is incredibly personal to me as each life hold a story that should be heard.

厚生労働省の資料によりますと、日本の総人口は減少する中、高齢者、
とくに75歳以上の占める割合が増加していくことが想定されています。
多くの都道府県では75歳以上の人口は今年、2025年中まで急速に上昇し、その後は緩やかになるか減少に転じる地域が大半となります。
これは団塊世代が徐々に減っていくということです。

I started my musical journey at the age of five, initially composing music with tablature taught by my father. Beginning with the penny whistle and violin, I played in our family band, busking on the streets of Bath.

Our travels across the country inspired compositions like "Road to Wareham." Music became my sanctuary, especially after being diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. In college, under mentors such as Dr. Rick Birley, Dr. Richard Hall, and Dr. Julie Trevett, I honed my skills in composition, theory, and piano, transitioning to formal music notation using Sibelius.

Today, I compose for film, video games, and theatre. My music, influenced by my diverse experiences, aims to evoke emotion and tell stories.

Jack Watkins is a British songwriter, producer and performer. His debut album, Wonderland, was released in 2024, and takes the listener on a colourful musical journey through love, loss and self-discovery.

Rich with beautiful melodies and poignant lyrics, Jack uses music to make sense of his own joyful, painful and complex life experiences. Wonderland peaked at number 8 in the UK iTunes Pop Chart, and was supported by regional and national radio play. A classically-trained pianist from the age of six, Jack’s signature piano melodies are at the heart of his songwriting. Drawing inspiration from both classic songwriters and modern pop producers, he takes a meticulous approach to production, layering orchestration, vocals and ear candy to create the polished Jack Watkins sound.

As a multi-faceted artist, Jack defies standard categorisation. A visionary creative, he uses imagery and theatrics to elevate his narrative. Much of his work explores navigating the world as a gay man, and provides an opportunity to break through limiting conventions to express a truer version of himself.

Recognised as high-potential talent by the Arts Council-backed organisation, Actual Music, Jack was invited to appear on BBC Radio Lancashire before performing live at their showcase at The Bureau in Blackburn in late 2024.
