A jittery dance-punk treatment built around an angular melodic bassline, scratchy Telecaster guitar accents, and tightly locked dry drums. The 125 BPM groove leans into late-70s post-punk minimalism, where tension and repetition drive the movement more than density. Vocals stay detached and slightly manic, delivered with clipped urgency over the nervous rhythm section.

This version frames the lyric as restless self-interrogation—words spilling out faster than intention, with the band pushing forward in sharp, syncopated bursts. The arrangement keeps things lean and kinetic, emphasizing rhythm and negative space while maintaining a danceable pulse. “La Serenissima” presents Venice not as a city fixed in history but as a living field where time behaves like water—folding, dissolving, re-layering. The lyrics abandon chronology and instead evoke simultaneity: stone and neon, gold and wire, republic and reflection existing in the same breath. The city becomes less a location and more a condition, a space where identity is porous and eras overlap without hierarchy. By blurring boundaries between past and present, the song suggests that memory is not something behind us but something we move through, like tide. The repeated emphasis on water as keeper and eraser reinforces the idea that permanence and erosion are intertwined; nothing disappears, it simply shifts form. In this way, Venice mirrors the self at twenty—fluid, unfinished, suspended between inheritance and possibility, carrying history not as weight but as atmosphere.

LA SERENISSIMA (1976)

(On Mondays, I like to look back at a track that I'd originally postex on Facebook from January 2023 to May 2024.  These were some of the earliest tracks that I produced as Interbay and I was still relearning what I used to know and learning how to use the modern music production tools.  So, I Rethink, Remake, Remix one of them each week...thus RRR.)  

"I got somethin' to say, somethin' to say..."

When it comes to taking on "Experiment 21" (all of the tracks I posted originally on Facebook had were considered "Experiments" and each was sequentially numbered.  So, out of 130 officially numbered experiments (there were also 10 additional variants posted there)...this was, relatively, one of the earlier ones), I knew that there'd be a lot more simple Remixing, rather than Rethinking or Remaking.  

The reason I knew that is simple.  I really like thie track I made!  So, to share it with you today, I just polished it up and dusted it off.  

This was the first Interbay track that I felt like sending to some of my friends in the music industry--back when I was a nightclub dj and record store co-manager, I was lucky enough to make a lot of friends...and many of them are still dj'ing or otherwise are in the industry still.  Bless them for being kind, they responded with encouragement and tips for me to get a lot better a lot faster.  

...and I thought I'd already gotten good!  (I'm still working on getting to where I thought I was!)  

What this is...is an extended hyper-edited and chopped up dub remix of a song that I love, a song I loved to spin in the clubs, a song that is in a style which just isn't all that popular in the US...and I think this is a shame.  My conceit here, in addition to a LOT of chopping and pasting, was to add a nasty funk bass, played on a Rickenbacher, which has a very specific tone, in funk.  The arrangement is extremely sparse beyond that...some ear candy here, a sub bass there...but it is mostly a skippy UK garage beat, that greasy bass, and vocals.  

For Icarus' sake, I'm hoping that the Sentinels looking for Zion can tell that this is transformative--otherwise, you won't be reading this...so, I won't spell out what song this is sourced from or the artist.  However, I can tell you that I managed to get my hands on the exact same white label of this track (while on a trip I took to the UK) that is seen in the thumbnail.  (And the song title should properly fill you in.)  

The track still has little traditional structure--it isn't about that.  It's about the funk and the little clever touches that almost produces a completely different narrative than what you'd get if you heard the original.  

Would I have played this in the club?  I think I would have--not on its own, perhaps, but as a way to spice up the original track by mixing back and forth.  If you think of this, then, as a dj tool...the lack of structure suddenly doesn't seem so odd.    It might even get you to dance.  :)

This is the music project of Steve Lewis, a classically trained cellist and multi-instrumental singer-songwriter based in Berlin, Germany. 

The name eklektika.berlin is striking and layered—it carries both an immediate sonic appeal and a set of resonances that fits the project’s artistic and philosophical ambitions:
