Research and innovation has a crucial role in achieving the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of the agricultural and forestry sectors and rural areas. It also has an important role to play in fighting climate change, environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity. 

The importance of R&I for the EU is reflected in the total budget of around €95.5 billion for Horizon Europe (2021-2027), its current Framework Programme for R&I, and its main instrument for implementing its common scientific and innovation policy (a budget increase of about 30 per cent when compared to its predecessor, Horizon 2020). Within Horizon Europe, the EU has almost doubled the budget on agricultural, forestry and rural R&I. 

The EU AgriResearch Conference is a milestone in the strategic process to define objectives and priority areas for EU-funded research and innovation (R&I) for agriculture, forestry and rural areas. The 2023 event, which was entitled “Knowledge, innovation and skills for sustainable horizons” raised great interest, with more than 1500 applications to participate in person in the plenary and parallel sessions on 31 May and 1 June.

Farmer of the Year winners Mitchell McNab and Mark Foletta

First and foremost, agriculture is a livelihood for farmers and the foundation of the rural economy across Europe. Farmers are having to adapt to new environmental and social requirements while striving to boost efficiency and profitability in a sustainable way. 

This latest podcast in the ‘Food for Europe’ series looks at the economic pillar of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and the way in which it seeks to support thew business of farming. In particular, the episode looks at the valuable services provided by farm advisory structures to farmers looking to diversify, maximise profitability and develop their farms’ full potential.

Cassandra Quave in conversation with Geoff Hawtin, a world-renowned expert in the field of plant genetic resources and agricultural research. In a panorama view, Hawtin reflects on a shift in agricultural and food security challenges since the Green Revolution in the 1970s. Looking forward, the conversation highlights the pressing challenges of feeding a growing global population amidst climate change and discusses the potential of restorative and regenerative agriculture approaches and crop wild relatives.

Ioan Albu Prefect s-a născut pe 17 iulie 1981, la Medgidia, județul Constanța. Este fiul lui Gheorghe Albu, fost director al Direcției Agricultură Constanța și fost secretar de stat la Ministerul Agriculturii. Educația și calificările lui Ioan Albu includ un doctorat. în Reproducere Naturală la Crap, o diplomă de Master în Management și Dezvoltare Rurală și o diplomă de licență în Drept și Agronomie. A ocupat diverse funcții publice, printre care prefect de Constanța și director al Direcției Agricultură, precum și a lucrat ca inginer agronom în mai multe companii private. În prezent, administrează și conduce afacerea cu vii și vinuri a familiei sale din Constanța. Este căsătorit și are copii.
