Like a Tiger

Last year, for American Independence Day, I posted a hyperpop track that had samples of fireworks and sneaky snippets from a certain Mr. Mellencamp.  (It was called "US"--and you can find it in the back catalog library on this page.)  I guess I was still hopeful that America wouldn't turn its back on the progress it had made in its 248 years.  

I'm not so hopeful this year.  Nor am I feeling much like celebrating.  

Can the grand experiment in making a more perfect union that we call America recover from one beautiful bill, a president that acts like a king thanks to a rubber stamp and unconcerned Congress, stripping away of all checks and balances, and living like the rule of law no longer matters--with the likelihood of economic collapse and the trashing of our international reputation.?  

Put it this way, my kid has asked me about housing costs in Canada.  

Here's the thing.  For nearly all of my life, I've been very proud to be an American and mostly proud of America.  When we made mistakes (and we've made some big ones), we worked to make things better and to improve ourselves.  

But at the moment?  I worry that the people who wrap themselves in the flag and declare everyone else to be "not American" like them are the very people pleased about such an Unamerican heel turn this country has already made...and is racing towards even worse.  

This song clocks in at over nine minutes while I tried to express my despondancy--but even still, I tried to leaven my dark mood with glimmers of hope.    

I don't want this track to feel like a lecture--I'm not really even trying to change anyone's mind with this track.  I am, however, expressing disappointment, sadness and fear--which are not feelings I'm used to feeling on this particular day.  

If you can vibe with that...then give this track a listen.  It is downtempo, a bit glitchy, sometimes unsettling, and a glimpse into how all of this is making me feel.  If you respect that attempt, with the meager artistic skills on display, then I hope you give it a like...share it, etc.  

And follow along for more.  I bet tomorrow's track will be more upbeat--both in tempo AND in mood.  Because sometimes music is meant to describe what is happening...and other times music is a great way to distract one's self from all of that and let joyful feelings flow through your ears and into your feet.  

I'd much rather do more of the second one than the first, but sometimes, you don't have a choice.  You get what you get.

Around two o'clock this morning, I finished a track that I assumed I'd be posting today.  

This is not that track.  

Instead of going to bed after finishing that track, I had an idea for ANOTHER track...and I stayed up to work on it.  Sleep?  Who needs it when you've got an idea?  

I know that most of the tracks that Interbay puts out (brand new music EVERY SINGLE DAY--so far!) here on SoundCloud is more synthesizer-centric (and yes, I realize that it takes a lot of nerve to keep the main genre tag for this track to be "electronic"--but, I assure you that it is.  No guitar strings were strummed in the making of 'Unforgettable'.)  

I contend that I can make whatever kind of music that I'm inspired to make and it still be, essentially, Interbay.  There are no definitions limiting the kind of mutant pop that Interbay shares with you...so if, like today, what I feel like sharing is an odd little uptempo folk/americana/indie pop hybrid--that, my friends, is STILL Interbay.  

I've wanted to make a track like this for awhile--uptempo, guitar-centric, with a folk-country-indie vibe...using a proper r&b style vocal...and then working on the sound design to add strings, harmonic plucks run through a bunch of electronic fx, acoustic drums and multi-tracked backing vocals.  It's just on the edge of being within reach of my technical abilities...so, it might not perfectly hold together--but when has ANY Interbay song perfectly held together?  

In case you're curious about the thumbnail, that's Ingrid Bergman from Casablanca.  An unforgettable performance in an unforgettable movie--with this scene being particularly unforgettable--so, thematically it works.  

It also has personal meaning, as it was my late wife's favorite movie--and, when we first met in person (after matching on Match), she immediately confronted me with mild outrage and surprise over the fact that I had not listed Casablanca on my list of favorite movies.  (Oh, I love "Casablanca"--but I love a lot of things...including the fact that she was willing to argue pop culture with me.)  

Like Ingrid, my late wife was Unforgettable too!  (She might have even liked this latest Interbay track--can't say that about all of them. ;) )
