Hey guys, my name is Emylbus. I have been the programmer for a relatively sucessful griefing team since August 2011, I rewrote the wiki article on minecraft griefing and am an active member on the HackForums griefing subforum. However, in addition to being a "professional" griefer, I am also a legit admin on two seperate servers where I help the owners prevent griefers and hackers from ruining the server experience.


Just because I know someone is going to want to start calling me names, I beg you guys to not turn this into a moral battle, I understand if you guys don't like that I am a griefer, but can we focus any discussion away from a useless fight? If we can focus this on prevention of griefing, or a mature discussion on the culture of griefers, I'd appreciate it.


You know, being griefed is bad enough, not being able to go into solo sessions is even worse, but the fact that the game doesn't even have a chat option so that I can tell the griefer to go fuck his own mother is what really makes me mad. Not expecting a fix tho, R* is too busy marketing a 7 year old game to give a fuck about greifers ruining yet another online experience, just needed to went a bit in my impotent rage.

The term "griefing" dates to the late 1990s, when it was used to describe the willfully antisocial behaviors seen in early massively multiplayer online games like 
Ultima Online,
 and later, in the 2000s, first-person shooters such as 
Counter-Strike
. Even before it had a name, griefer-like behavior was familiar in the virtual worlds of text-based Multi-User Domains (MUDs), where joyriding invaders inflicted "virtual rape" and similar offenses on the local populace.[3] Julian Dibbell's 1993 article "A Rape in Cyberspace" analyzed the griefing events in a particular MUD, LambdaMOO, and the staff's response.


Many subscription-based games actively oppose griefers, since their behavior can drive away business.[14] It is common for developers to release server-side upgrades and patches to annul griefing methods. Many online games employ gamemasters that reprimand offenders. Some use a crowdsourcing approach, where players can report griefing. Malicious players are then red-flagged, and are then dealt with at a gamemaster's discretion. As many as 25% of customer support calls to companies operating online games deal specifically with griefing.[15]





A common trick that griefers use is pretending to be from popular Minecraft websites or clans and asking for OP status in order to "review" the server. This is not a typical form of destruction griefing; however, this is a strategy employed by many griefers to gain trust and cause rage, or it may be done to get OP status and cause great destruction.


What's worse is that the griefer that built the overloaded chunk wouldn't be kicked; they place the signs gradually, which means the packets won't overload (that is unless they disconnect when there are enough signs and they're within the vicinity).
