"Mean Streets of Encinitas" is a witty and satirical track that paints a vivid picture of the evolving landscape of Encinitas. With sharp humor and keen observations, the song delves into the influx of spandex-clad cyclists, peculiar bike designs, and the quirks of modern urban development. The catchy verses highlight the contrast between the past and present, where kooks become VIPs with yoga shorts and wave storms, and developers reshape the city.

The pre-bridge and bridge sections emphasize the changes in local culture, with regulations, smoking bans, and the influence of a wacky mayor named Tony Kranz. The song's playful critique extends to the rich locals in McMansions and new residents unaware of their "transplant" status.

With its engaging lyrics and lively rhythm, "Mean Streets of Encinitas" captures the essence of a town undergoing transformation while maintaining a lighthearted and entertaining tone.

If NIMBY is the classist rejection of affordable housing ("Not in my back yard”), then YIMBY is sold as the progressive counter to it: “Yes, in my back yard; because I believe affordable housing should be widely available, even in my own neighborhood.” But of course, housing development has nothing to do with the needs of the poor or the working class. It has nothing to do with the public purpose. 

Steve’s guest, political economist David Fields, explains: 

“YIMBY is yes to housing in my backyard, but housing for developers to extract profit from land value.  So build as much as possible within a given area and, in the end, extract as much as possible through rent extraction and land value appreciation. It's not, in my view, yes to actual affordable housing in my backyard to house working class folks. No, it's yes to luxury skyscrapers, luxury this, luxury that. Build as cheaply as possible for vested interests to maximize gain.” 

YIMBY’s want us to believe that sheer quantity will bring prices down, because that’s how the market works.  Those who object are accused of NIMBYism. In addition,  

“They're economically illiterate, they're economically stupid, they don't know, they don't pay attention, and they're not letting the magic do its magic. Which, anybody who knows a modicum of economics and knows that supply and demand is institutionally configurated - not natural  - should be flabbergasted and say, how did this get to be so popular, so celebrated?  Well, there are vested interests involved.” 

The episode explores the misleading narratives of YIMBYism and compares the market-driven approach to housing to trickle-down economics, emphasizing the constructed scarcity and profit motives behind urban planning. David points out the misuse of economic models like the Marshallian Cross, highlighting flaws in the market logic often used to justify YIMBY policies.  

David and Steve talk about the broader neoliberal agenda of privatization and deregulation, and its stranglehold on government policies. Awareness and organization are needed to combat systemic class inequality in housing and beyond. 

David Fields is from a critical realist and genetic structuralist ontology and epistemology. His work centers on the intricacies concerning the interactions of foreign exchanges and capital flows, with economic growth, fiscal and monetary policy and distribution, whereby critical attention is paid to the notion of endogenous money. He also delves into the political economy of regional development to study patterns with respect to the nature of housing, social stratification, and community planning.

Public schools are one of the last remaining universal public goods in the United States—and are also some of our most unequal institutions. In Unsettling Choice, Ujju Aggarwal explores how the expansion of choice-based programs led to greater inequality and segregation in a gentrifying New York City neighborhood during the years following the Great Recession, mobilizing mechanisms rooted in market logics to recruit families with economic capital on their side while solidifying a public sphere that increasingly resembled the private. Here, Aggarwal is joined in conversation with Sabina Vaught.





Ujju Aggarwal is assistant professor of anthropology and experiential learning at The New School. She is author of Unsettling Choice: Race, Rights, and the Partitioning of Public Education and coeditor of What’s Race Got to Do with It? How Current School Reform Policy Maintains Racial and Economic Inequality.

Sabina Vaught is professor at the University of Pittsburgh and director of the Kinloch Commons for Critical Pedagogy and Leadership. Vaught is coauthor of The School-Prison Trust and author of Compulsory: Education and the Dispossession of Youth in a Prison School.

Crossing the Track

La Fièbrve is an immersive performance that intertwines live painting, sound, and mixed reality to explore the theme of gentrification, drawing inspiration from the writings of Henri Lefebvre. The title, a wordplay between la fièvre (fever) and the philosopher’s name, reflects the feverish tension of the gentrified city— a living organism that burns and suffocates under the pressures of the capitalist system. Just as fever is the body’s response to an infection, the city reacts to its imbalances, revealing signs of distress and alienation.

This performance, curated and performed by Andrea Barbara Romita for Onirica and Dimensions DAO, takes place on February 8, 2025, during Arte Fiera Bologna 2025, Bologna ArtCity 2025, and Bologna Art Night 2025.

The sound art, composed specifically for the performance using the 3D sound databending technique, serves as a compass guiding me throughout the act, marking the passage of time and anchoring me to the present (especially in the disorienting context of wearing a VR headset). Simultaneously, it narrates the performance to the audience, unfolding like a story— a sonic narration that enhances the details and intensifies the pathos of the experience.

-About Daren and Jenn-

Jenn is a queer, Black feminist from Oakland. Daren is an introverted nerd and novelist from Anaheim.

They are boo’ed up and have been since 2002 when they bonded over a mutual love of Brian McKnight’s “Never Felt This Way”, their favorite Brandy lyrics, and nineties TV like Family Matters, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and Living Single. It was a shared obsession with Black cultural icons, histories, and artistry that drew Jenn and Daren to one another even though they are actually completely different personality-wise.

Jenn and Daren have always said to themselves, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a show?” Well, no major networks have reached out yet. So, until that happens, you can find the them here, sharing their views on race and culture and everything in between.

They are young thirty-somethings who have been married since for over a decade. Jenn and Daren have three beautiful, brilliant, radical, snarky kids who play no games.
