This work is an impressive synthesis of the development of European empire and its connection with historical geography.  This has been done before, but usually in the context of the development of British, French or German imperialism. It is most often encountered in the debates on the opening and dividing of Africa by the European powers which lasted roughly (at least in the late imperial phase) from 1882-1914. The whole period is sometimes known as the "Scramble for Africa'. Imperialism, as it has been researched before has primarily dealt with who was responsible for the mess that was the Scramble for Africa and it's rather wild historical events-the British occupation of Egypt and the Anglo-French rivalry, the Boer War in South Africa, and other major events. Most of the major work has been political and focused heavily on the questions of why imperialism developed the way it did.
Butlin in this work examines the nuts and bolts of imperialism- how trade was structured, what sorts of societies promoted and cultivated imperialism and the geographic knowledge that was necessary for exploration, what kinds of influences different cultures had on each other when they in fact did meet and interact. These are things that with the exception of economics (a very big exception) are difficult to document but important to recover. A good example of this is the South African Boer war in 1899-1902 and it's aftermath. Butlin's account has the virtue of not being so focused on the politics of European imperialism-and so brings a broader perspective to an area of study that is dense with political works by various historians. His account updates and modifies many previous treatments of European imperialism.
The first three chapters cover what you might call the ideology of imperialism and the cultural beliefs behind the many of the actions taken-this includes in an oblique way things like the role of the Imperial Office in Great Britain, military needs (especially in Egypt), and colonial competition. Chapters 3 and 4 are much more strictly historical geography and deal with the movement of peoples  and groups throughout the various lands held by each country. Each major European power is covered and- unlike many books-in Asia as well as Africa and the Middle East. Butlin uses his historical geography to also discuss what sorts of economies each society had (agricultural, industrial etc) and how it was linked to transport.  He pays special attention to countries like India and Africa where particular products (India-tea, rice; Africa-gold; diamonds) would lead to serious conflict later. Butlin's book also covers events all the way through what was become known as decolonization-the winding down of the British colonial system.
Having said all of these things, I few caveats should be noted. The author is a Emeritus professor of geography (one of the reasons I bought the book), but the book itself is historical geography and not political history. If you are looking for a in-depth political understandings of imperialism-this is probably not the best place to start. I would try Cain and Hopkins, British Imperialism: Innovation and Expansion, 1618-1914;  and Cain and Hopkins. British Imperialism, Crisis and Deconstruction, 1914-1990 (Longman, 1990-1993).  But what Butlin does do is to tie a very complex world together in a fascinating book.

This book is the outcome of the work of contributors who participated in the wo- shop “Mapping Different Geographies (MDG)” in February 2010, held in Puchberg am Schneeberg, Austria. This meeting brought together cartographers, artists and geoscientists who research and practice in applications that focus on enhancing o- to-one communication or develop and evaluate methodologies that provide inno- tive methods for sharing information. The main intention of the workshop was to investigate how ‘different’ geographies are being mapped and the possibilities for developing new theories and techniques for information design and transfer based on place or location. So as to communicate these concepts it was important to appreciate the many contrasting meanings of ‘mapping’ that were held by workshop participants. Also, the many (and varied) viewpoints of what different geographies are, were ela- rated upon and discussed. Therefore, as the focus on space and time was embedded within everyone’s felds of investigation, this was addressed during the workshop. This resulted in very engaging discourse, which, in some cases, exposed the restrictions that certain approaches need to consider. For participants, this proved to be most useful, as this allowed them to appreciate the limits and restrictions of their own approach to understanding and representing different geographies. As well, the workshop also was most helpful as a vehicle for demonstrating the common ground of interest held by the very diverse areas of endeavour that the workshop participants work within.
