If We Mess Up We Can Always Try Again!

An early instrumental mix of "Cognitive Dissonance" which was composed & recorded in 1997 in Canberra Australia. There was also a version with singing-chanting male vocals [doing lyrics] and some other elements. Hopefully it is found one day in a search through dozens of DATS!  

The thinking behind this track was to make something that was sort of like The Chemical Brothers mid-90s thing. But even when I was trying to make something more "accessible" - in theory - it still came out as dark, industrial, gritty, clunky, noisey, weird and probably quite "oddball" in the minds of the average person.   :] 

I recall I had been working on a cleaner minimalist version of this, with tidier percussion, less of the underlying noise and a better mix. But like 1001 things it wasn't finished. Maybe one day I can fire up the ancient studio gear and see if this comes out sounding close to this; if the synths and drum machines and so on still have the sounds & settings. For now, this is the best version at hand and I've been sitting on it since 1997, aiming to make it a bit better but haven't yet done so, so ... here it is! ;]

The female vocal samples are from a young relative who was having fun with the microphone and my new sampler. :] 
 
I also have a recording of a live performance; a longer version of this track at an event called "The Arts School Ball" in Canberra in 1997. I can't recall what project title it was as. It was probably as "AYA" as that was then the title to highlight the "intelligent dance music" the instrumental electronic music side of EYE. They were essentially EYE tracks but without the guitars, lyrics and singing apart from vocals as effects. Because back then [and still I suppose] the singing/vocals, and the attempting to convey a thoughtful message, that was rather frowned upon by the hipsters in the scenes of people into electronic music. Several people had suggested "I like/love your music but the messages are so heavy. Maybe you should do stuff that's just the electronic music?!? More people might get into that."

I think this track was only released prior on a custom burnt CDR album - possibly "Aphazia 1992-1998" - which was available via our Blatant Propaganda records mail order service; in the late 1990s and early 2000s; which ceased service in 2005. 
It might have also been on the mp3.com site around 98-2002ish before that was sold to a conglomerate and the independent underground artist-band accounts were nuked.
