Adia Benton is a cultural anthropologist who studies global health, biomedicine, and the political economy of humanitarianism. She is a Professor of Anthropology and African Studies at Northwestern University and the author of HIV Exceptionalism: Development through Disease in Sierra Leone.

34. Dignity in development - Tom Wein

In this episode, Amb. Ward discusses his upbringing in Jamaica and his influences, his thoughts on colonial reparations and justice in the African continent and the Caribbean, and building democracies in post-colonial societies, among other topics. 

Ambassador Curtis Ward is an Attorney-at-Law and International Consultant, and former Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the United Nations with Special Responsibility for Security Council Affairs, serving on the UN Security Council from 2000 to 2001. He has extensive knowledge and experience in national and international legal and policy frameworks for effective implementation of UN and other international anti-terrorism mandates, including countering and preventing violent extremism. 

Ambassador Ward traveled to over 30 countries representing the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee for meetings and discussions with government leaders and high-level officials, on counter-terrorism capacity building and related issues; and has provided advisory services to the UN, regional organizations, governments, and NGOs. He has participated as a keynote speaker at various forums, and has lectured globally on a number of security and related issues.

Ambassador Ward holds a Master of Laws from Georgetown University, a Juris Doctor from Howard University, and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) (Economics and Political Science) from Howard as well. As an academic, he is also an Adjunct Professor in the Homeland Security Graduate Program at the University of the District of Columbia (since 2012); and is a former Adjunct Professorial Lecturer at George Washington University – Elliott School of International Affairs (2010-14). He has given a series of lectures at the National Defense University; at the NATO School (SHAPE), Oberammergau, Germany; the Kofi Anan International Peacekeeping Centre, Accra, Ghana; and lectures on WMDs at the Caribbean Maritime University, Kingston, Jamaica.

It is with pleasure that I was able to invite my colleague Gregory T Chin into the Virtual Studio to discuss all matters related to the BRICS+. Greg has been an observer of the BRICS for some time, and its main institutional creation the New Development Bank (NDB).

I was keen to explore the BRICS - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa now that it has extended membership to Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Where is the BRICS+ headed in this evolving geopolitical environment? And I wanted to explore with Greg the major BRICS institution, the NDB, and what the BRICS+ hopes to accomplish with this Multilateral Development Bank (MDB).

Gregory T Chin is an Associate Professor of Political Economy in the Department of Politics, and Faculty of Graduate Studies at York University (Canada), with a focus on China, Asia, the BRICS, global governance, and the political economy of international money and finance. He is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow of the Global China Initiative at Boston University's Global Development Policy Center, and of the Foreign Policy Institute at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Prior to joining York University in 2007, he was First Secretary (Development) at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing 2003-2006. He handled strategic policy engagement with decision-makers in China, government agencies, key Chinese think tanks, and liaised with diplomatic representatives of other countries, the major multilateral development banks and international organizations, and private international foundations and donors.

His recent publications include: an "Introduction - The Evolution of New Development Bank", "Bangladesh and New Development Bank", and "US Financial Statecraft and China" (published in Italian by Istituto Treccani). Also he recently published on the New Development Bank with – “Introduction – The evolution of New Development Bank (NDB): A decade plus in the making”.

Surbhi Kesar, lecturer at SOAS Department of Economics, in conversation with Sara Stevano, provides a comprehensive analysis of the informal economy, challenging traditional economic development theories by demonstrating how postcolonial economies persistently reproduce informal economic structures. 
 
Her research, primarily focused on India, reveals a complex landscape of economic flux characterised by precarity, limited upward mobility, and systemic exclusion. 
 
By examining the historical and contemporary dynamics of informality, Kesar argues that current economic growth models fail to address the fundamental structural challenges faced by workers in the Global South. Her work highlights the need to understand informality not as a temporary phase, but as a critical component of contemporary capitalist reproduction.

#6. Informal Economy: New Approaches

This month we are honoured to be joined by one of our colleagues from Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki. Tiina Seppälä came to Global Development Studies by way of International Relations. Her work has looked at global inequalities, poverty, war, and social justice issues among many others. Activism is also an area of interest and Tiina has worked with peace activists in the UK, slum and women’s rights activists in South Asia, as well as asylum seekers in the Finnish context. Tiina gives us insight into her trajectory and how she naturally progressed from one project to another and how funding has had an impact on the directions of her career. During her fieldwork she had some interesting encounters with the dark side of development, or what could be called maldevelopment. Tiina speaks openly and honestly about her own positionality within research and some of the mismatches between the theoretical and the real. The role of unlearning can sometimes be just as important as the role of learning. Tiina gives us insight into the ways in which artistic methods have played a role in how she approaches her research. Our conversation is wide ranging and quite compelling!
