More Balearic bliss this week for the Sunset Lovers is coming from Amsterdam-based veteran DJ and producer Graham Newby aka DJ Gripper.

Graham ‘Gripper’ Newby began DJing in 1987 and producing music in 1991 and he has had his music released on labels such as Grand Central Records, Dancefloor USA, OffWorld Sounds, Om Records, Upskirt Records Ibiza, Fat City Recordings, Triple J Australia, Lockdown, NuNorthern Soul and many more.  

Originally covering funk, jazz, soul-based beats, deeper US house, and hip-hop, his music had always been eclectic and left of center. 

In 2021 under the name Tambores En Benirras, he released the album ‘Orbe Dotado’ on Ibiza’s highly regarded NuNorthern Soul label to much critical acclaim. 

The new alias allowed Gripper to explore and develop the more leftfield, balearic, and ambient aspects of his production work, to produce music taking in classical, ambient, and avant-garde influences and take his sound outside of previous confines. 

The label, run by long-time Ibiza resident and DJ, Phat Phil Cooper, released the follow-up Tambores En Benirras LP, ‘Ondas Horizontales’ at the end of September 2023 and once again, the record was celebrated amongst the White Isle’s Balearic family and the wider underground electronic music fraternity, earning Gripper widespread acclaim from fellow electronic music peers. 

His earlier releases have been supported and played by such luminaries as Louie Vega, Kenny Dope Gonzalez, Tony Humphries, Roger Sanchez, DJ Camacho, and Laurent Garnier, earning him a far-reaching and genre-crossing network of friends and contacts across the wider music industry.

Having played across Europe, in the USA at regular Miami WMC events, and further afield in Asia and North Africa, the highlights of his 37-year-long DJing career are many. 

Gripper has hosted many events from this 100-capacity club alongside artists such as Ruf Dug, Opolopo, Todd Terry, Marcel Vogel, Luke Una, Terry Farley, Victor Simonelli, Shut Up & Dance, LFO, A Certain Ratio, Jon Dasilva and many more.


His long-standing love affair with radio work began after guesting on BBC Radio Lancashire in 1989 on Sunday afternoon institutions, Funkology, and Gary Hickson’s dance shows. 

Since 2021, Gripper has been a resident at Ibiza’s bohemian music hub, Word Of Mouth Radio Cafe, and playing regularly poolside at the legendary Pikes, on the bill with artists such as Crazy P, David Morales, Luca Averna, Andy Wilson, Dicky Trisco, Mella Dee, and Moxie amongst many more.

2024 will see Gripoer continuing his long-standing residency at Amsterdam’s Kashmir lounge, hosting a new monthly radio show ‘No Fixed Abode’ from the city and returning to Ibiza for another season playing and working on a new studio album as well as releasing an album of Tambores En Benirras remixes.
