Last week (Feb 2024) I was made aware by conductor Bjorn Bantock that is great grandfather made an orchestration of his brass band 'classic' from 1932-3. When he prepared the score is not known, but it is part of an epic choral setting of Prometheus Unbound that Bantock worked on between 1932 and 36 and which survives as a short score draft. 
The manuscript score is lodged in the BBC Music Library. I am grateful to the composer's  grandson Cuillin Bantock for granting permission for me to create a modern digital score and set of parts. 
He scored for an orchestra of double woodwind plus piccolo and contrabassoon, two trumpets, four horns, three trombones, tuba and contrabass tuba (a brass band double B flat bass). As this instrument plays for just a few bars, I distributed the part between contrabassoon, tuba and double basses.

Symphonic Prelude   Prometheus Unbound

Granville Bantock's setting of words by Harold Boulton is prefaced on the score with the words: 'The refrain of this song was actually used recently on a Hebredean Island by a singer who thereby attracted a quantity of seals to gather round and listen intently to the singing.'

The 'Hoiran, oiran, oiran, oiro' of the refrain is certainly evocative. Bantock's setting is performed here by David Barton (piano) and Ruth Carlyle (voice). The painting of the seal is by Nic Carlyle.

I work as a freelance music consultant, writing about, editing and producing (audio, digital and print)  classical, contemporary classical and band music.
