Ashley Wagenaar is the new Conservation Agronomist at Farming Smarter in Lethbridge.
Her role is to help farmers implement or change - nitrogen practices, cover cropping, and grazing on their operation.

New Independent Agronomy Program Aims to Help Farmers Implement Change

Rangelands are vast, natural grasslands, shrublands, woodlands, wetlands, and deserts that support grazing and browsing mammals and they are primarily natural ecosystems with native vegetation.These rangelands can become degraded by fire or improper grazing. We talk with Kari Veblen, professor of Rangeland Ecology at Utah State University about her research that focuses on the ecology and management of rangelands.  Her research emphasizes multi-use landscapes, public and private, that are managed simultaneously for wildlife conservation and sustainable livestock production.  The ultimate goal of her work is to inform sustainable management of rangeland ecosystems.

Restoration on the Range

Like gas and groceries, the cost of trucking and raising dairy heifers out West has gone up. Does this present Wisconsin farmers with an opportunity to lure these animals back to the state with low-input approaches and similar performance standards with well-managed grazing? We sit down with Jason Cavadini, UW-Madison Extension Grazing Outreach Specialist, and Mike Redetzke, a farmer custom-raising dairy heifers near Colby to discuss the nuts and bolts of getting confinement dairy operations in Wisconsin to put their heifers out on grass.

About 3000 Barnacle Geese arrive in October to spend the winter in North Sligo. The Ballygilgan Nature Reserve is one of the best sites in Ireland for seeing these geese in winter. 

The geese breed in Greenland in the summer and spend the winter in Ireland. They graze in Lissadell – Maugherow area every winter until April, spending every night on the island of Inishmurray.*

Solar plus farming, called Agrivoltaics is helping farmers generate new sources of income, keep the family farm viable and keep farming in the solar farm. We meet up with farmer, former oil and gas guy and current renewable energy developer Claude Mindorf at the Joffre Solar Farm in Alberta to talk about agrivoltaics. 

It turns out Canada could produce all of its electricity from renewable energy that would occupy less than 1% of farmland and enhance the viability of farming itself at the same time.

Climate Stories Ambassador, Princess Ewa, speaks about Benue state, known as the "food basket" of Nigeria. The agricultural area has been adversely affected by climate changes elsewhere in Nigeria which have decreased grassland for herders, forcing them to move into Benue in search of grazing area and water. This has resulted in conflict between farmers and herders, and many farmers have been displaced into IDP camps. Princess is working toward climate justice. She sees potential solutions in government support for farmers and herders to cope with and adapt to climate changes and climate education initiatives to promote peaceful conflict resolution.

New research from the University of Guelph is revealing how different grazing strategies can transform pasture productivity and livestock health.
Kayleigh DeCoste is a master’s student in the Department of Plant Agriculture at the University of Guelph.
Her master's research is looking at the effects of different grazing strategies on pasture performance and cow-calf performance on Ontario pastures.

Climate Stories Project (CSP) is an educational and artistic forum for sharing personal stories about the effects of climate change on our lives and communities. CSP focuses on personal oral histories, which bring an immediacy to the sometimes abstract nature of climate change communication. Some of us may recount dramatic events such as floods and wildfires, or we may address our observations of changes in seasonal patterns and our fears for the future of our families and communities. We may discuss how climate change is forcing our communities to adapt to extreme weather and sea level rise. Or we may speak about how we are getting involved in the movement to fight the fossil fuel industry through community organizing or nonviolent protest.There is no "right" way to talk about climate change, as it is a vast topic that is increasingly touching every corner of our lives. CSP also facilitates educational workshops where students learn to speak about their own responses to climate change and interview guest speakers about theirs. In addition, some climate stories are featured in music and soundscape projects that allow audiences to witness the effects of climate change in a novel way.
