We are pleased to finally announce the winner of our DJ competition for this special 199th podcast . This competition was open to all Swiss based DJs in order to support local talent and provide them with a platform to get the recognition these artists deserve.

Congratulations on being the winning podcast!  

➢Thank you very much! What a pleasure! 

Tell us what song puts you in a good mood when you wake up in the morning?  

➢In the morning I like rather quiet music. What I particularly like at the moment is, for example, "volta" by Boogie Belgique, "mind if i stay" by Kadebostany or "nie meh" by Dr. Mo. 

What got you into DJing?  

➢Electronic music has accompanied me since my youth. In the clubs, I was always happy to see female DJs. In 2018, I decided to start DJing myself. At that time, the downtempo scene in Bern was growing, which motivated me even more. Because I had hardly any previous experience, I needed time to familiarise myself with the technical requirements. In 2020, I put my first mixtape online.  

How has the music scene developed in Berne over the last few years and could you recommend the listeners an event that you love?  

➢In my opinion, the downtempo genre in Berne has developed quite a bit in the last few years. At the event series "Flanieren" in the Bollwerk chapter and "Club Lento" in the Turnhalle, there are always great acts playing. I can warmly recommend both formats.  

Where would be the best place to take us ,to enjoy a sunset in Berne? 

➢I particularly like sunsets by the water. For example, at Lake Wohlen or on the Aare. A beautiful spot is by the Halenbrücke. I can also reveal here that Soulraves will probably be back in Bern in the autumn. That's what we call our interpretation of ecstatic dance. After a long break, the collective has reformed and is planning the next events 😊 

When the clubs/festivals re-open, where would you go to first?  

➢I'm looking forward to the Montsomnia Festival at the end of July. There should also be a Downtempo Daydance in Thun at the beginning of August, I'm really looking forward to that too! 

Lastly, regarding this mix you have done for us, can you tell us a little bit of your thought process behind choosing the tracks you chose?  

➢ I recorded this mix at the beginning of spring. After the long winter without being able to dance properly, I felt a great desire to play energetic and danceable tracks. I imagined the first warm sunsets of the year and hoped to be able to spend them soon with dear people and good music. Have fun with it!

Welcome everyone to Episode 8 of The FunkDown bringing you 2 hours of Nu Disco floor fillers, soulful grooves and funk filled gems. 
This week we are delighted to have a guest on the show providing a mix for the second hour.  

Our special guest is Bats who hails from the north east UK (Hull).
Like many his journey through house and affiliated scenes in the 90's gave birth to a love of all things disco! 
Bats is 1/3 of the @DiskoKlubb DJ Crew he has enjoys contributing to Hull's music scene, DiskoKlubb has been running nights for 7 years in the city, as well as playing the marquee events and festivals that the city hosts.

DJing has been a teenage love affair for Bats with influences spanning most genres. Speaking disco he simply says, 'most of the tracks I liked was edited from a disco beat or vocal, as I looked more into the genre I became aware of how many genres have relied one the influence of the 4-4 beat, hypnotic riffs and powerful vocals'. He spins what makes him smile and says that, 'it's never been about playing the latest top 20 releases, its always about the ride a DJ can take you on'. Although having respect for the new engineers and producers he has a ultimate respect for the originators and pioneers of the disco and what is now house music scenes.

Certified Jackin was formed in 2011 with the intention of taking the big-bass “jackin house” sound that was taking over the North of England and the Midlands and deliver to a wider audience. This was achieved via a simple YouTube channel which quickly, and slightly unexpectedly, became a massive success, harnessing close to 100,000 subscribers and over 25 million views. The sound we delivered was greatly received throughout the United Kingdom and across the globe.
 
Over the following years, we helped promote and intensify the early careers of well-respected artists who featured heavily under the CJ name. Artists such as Hannah Wants, Chris Lorenzo and of course, our head honcho: ILL PHIL, amongst many others. Their meteoric rise through the music scene has, along with other artists and DJs brought underground House music to the forefront of the dance music world, specifically the ‘Jackin’, ‘Bass’ and ‘Tech House’ genres.
 
We host events across the United Kingdom, mainly at the prestigious Lightbox in London where we have hosted some of the best in the business: Endor, The Wideboys, Tom Bull, Rich Pinder, Skapes, Martin Ikin and others. We have taken Certified to Dublin with Tom Zanetti, Tom Garnett and Nick Hannam. We’ve also graced Tank in Sheffield, Insomnifest in Leeds, Manchester, Rotherham, Maidstone and Dover.
 
ILL PHIL’s world-famous Mixtapes have amassed millions of plays on SoundCloud and our debut album ‘Certified Jackin: Underground House Music’ cracked the Top 10 of the iTunes dance chart in mid-2014.
 
Our sound has naturally changed over time, but our values remain the same. We aim to deliver high energy, feel good, bass-laden house music with a twist. Full frontal, underground beats.

London based DJ Jay Lee is a long time Disco and House Music fan
After becoming fascinated by DJing in his mid-late teens, Jay began playing Funky House at parties and various venues around London alongside other multi genre DJs in the early 2000s with good success, but Jay decided to hang up the headphones in 2010, returning in 2019 after rediscovering his Djing passion.
He's been back behind the decks for the last 2 years crafting a sound very much based around the Nu Disco and Funk scene.
Jay’s sound is heavily influenced by his love of 70s/80s Disco & Soul alongside Classic and Soulful House. However, by no means shy to experiment with different sounds. He can often bring a mixture into his sets, from Jackin House cuts to Afro and Latin beats.
In 2020 he appeared on QuestLondonRadio to showcase his sound alongside his regular Nu-Disco mix series on both Mixcloud & Soundcloud. bringing together a blend of Disco and House flavours to keep the listener grooving whilst building his audience and following on these platforms. He has also provided guestmixes for shows on House Music Radio, That Disco Groove, Discnotheque, The Discography Lessons and Daydream Disco to date with many more to come.
2021 shows no sign of Jay stopping with his Nu-Disco series evolving into his latest project and podcast series The Funkdown Show, with the hope to get more out and play gigs in the near future. Be sure to check out updates via his socials.
