What we have here is a melancholy pop song with a female vocal hook and some pretty acoustic guitars.  I pushed the bass louder, so this midtempo house track has some oomph--didn't want it to feel too precious.  In the midsong, I channeled my inner Bernie Worrell for some squelchy funky synths and a bit of grit.  I am well pleased with how this one turned out.  You might even be able to studio to it!

It's not unusual for me to use modular synths, beats & glitches. But for this track, I got a capo clamp for my bass guitar, after frequently misusing it like a 6-string on pop collaborations. I recorded 3 layers & digitally mangled parts of it, but realized I should finally get a 6-string to record another layer (& for future parts, e.g. ‘kanaalleven’). The ambient field recordings, main cover art picture & all composing/recording happened near the Amsterdam-Rhine canal in Utrecht, NL, hence the ‘canal-side dub’ name.

Kanaalzijdedub

First of all, a disclaimer:  I have nothing against the great state of Indiana.  This song is a creative invention based on a memory of a long car ride my family took on the way back to Wisconsin from having vacationed in Florida.  There is a stretch of I-64 that feels endless (especially having just been to Walt Disney World and Busch Gardens recently) and empty--or, at least it was like that when I was 11.  (I also drove that same stretch of highway when driving from Asheville, North Carolina to Chicago on my Summer 2009 Continental Comedy Trip...but by then I had satellite radio in the car, which seemed to make things a bit easier.)  

I could have just as easily have made this song about North Dakota or Wyoming or the drive from I once took to Winnemucca, NV.  But, last night I didn't know what this song would be--I just had some acoustic guitar bits and pieces and I'd created some drums to go with them...and I needed a temporary name for the project so I could save it.  

I picked Indiana for two reasons.  First, the track, barely started, felt like it was going in an indie pop/indie rock/indie folk sort of direction.  Second, I thought Indianapolis (which I thought of because sometimes I watch the Pat McAfee show on ESPN, which is broadcast from Indianapolis)...but felt that was too long.  Thus, Indiana.  

I suppose that triggered the R. Dean Taylor song "Indiana Wants Me" playing in my head as I woke up this morning, intending on taking this partial track somewhere...and while I didn't go all cops & robbers (ironically, also the name of a song by the UK band The Hoosiers.  Hoosiers=people from Indiana...IT'S ALL CONNECTED, SCULLY!!!) with the scenario I was thinking up, not the way that R. Dean Taylor does...but the idea of "not being in Indiana" anymore was definitely the speck around which the crystal formed.  

There might also be a little bit of "Turn Around" by Whiskeytown in the DNA of this song.  (I stopped being a Ryan Adams fan awhile ago, but for "Strangers Almanac" by Whiskeytown, i can separate the art from the artist.  And fair props to Ryan--"Turn Around" is a MUCH better song than "Indiana" by Interbay is.  Just try to stop being a jerk, ok?)

I like this song enough to want to take another stab at it in the future--ditch the spoken word (and especially the vocoder--mostly there, with a few other touches, so I can keep the main tag as "Electronic"...as Interbay songs without that tag seem to struggle for plays) and actually sing the song.  It'll happen someday...that's the plan anyway.  

It's a story.  It's not MY story, but I think we can all feel like we can own a piece of it.  Give it a listen and see if you do.  :)  Thanks!  

(Oh, and under 4 minutes!!!  Too many epic length Interbay songs in a row, I wanted something simple and short.  I almost stopped early, and the song would have been the first Interbay song on SoundCloud that would have been under 3 minutes...but, as usual, I kept trying to cram more stuff in and it added another minute to the track.)

The nice thing about working in electronic dance music is even if you only have a fragment of an idea, you can still create something magical from it!  

As usual, today's Interbay track is ALL OVER THE PLACE when it comes to sounds and vibes--however, this is probably the closest that I've come to pure "house" music in awhile.  

Of course, then you have to nail down WHAT KIND OF HOUSE IS IT?  I don't...Colonial?  

The fragment I had was the "You find yourself in a boat on the river" part.  It came to me in the car, and I raced inside to record it before I forgot it (which happens too much lately, as my working memory is unreliable, at best.)  And that fragment sat, waiting for me to come up with the rest of the song.  I used to always start with the words, which helped me build the scaffolding around the structure implied by those words, when I was songwriting in the LongAgo...but I haven't done that with Interbay--part of the experiment of Interbay is seeing if I could retrain myself to write music first...  Mixed results so far. ;) 

I thought it would be a strummy acoustic guitar indie folk sort of thing--kind of singer-songwriter-y.  But, last night, I found myself hearing it quite differently.  I suppose the spark of inspiration to push me away from indie folk and towards house would be listening to a demo for Roger Sanchez's sample pack.  

I actually knew Roger--back in my dj days, I met him at a Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach one year...and then every year after that, he'd recognize me and we'd talk.  (Until I stopped going to WMC...and stopped dj'ing.)  

There was definitely a vibe that, while different from my original idea, could certainly help that fragment of lyrics and melody I had take shape.  

From there, the puzzle pieces started to fill themselves in rather quicklky.  The blurry on the edge of distortion bass.  The skritchy guitars and the psychedelic disco funk wah-wah guitar licks.  Very brassy brass.  Morse code synths.  All of that to a steady Roger Sanchez-style groove.  

The last two pieces needed to be placed:  How to get proper vocals, from my fragment of an idea, on the track?  And that cheeky something else that all Interbay tracks seem to require (leaving Icarus breathless and paranoid.)  

The first piece was placed when I simply took my scratch vocal and slapped a bunch of Waves vocal harmony all over it--giving it a jazzy neo-Beach Boys feel.  (Yes, underneath all of those electronics--it's me singing.  I've been saying that this day would come for months now--though, here's an Easter Egg for you to track down...this isn't actually the first song to include my voice.  There was one earlier...that nobody noticed (not that they should--most of you don't know what I sound like. ;)   And, for the record, I don't sound like THIS either.)  

The second piece was picked out the moment I realized that I'd subconsciously pinched some words from hit songs by two very famous groups.  I chose to incorporate some heavily processed vocal snippets from one...and chose, wisely, not to include anything from the other.  If you're a fan of the kind of music I like, the snippets are probably obvious.  Hopefully not to the alogorithms, but I'm not making music for them.

What are the odds that FOUR days in a row, the Interbay posted track has a title that starts with"X"???  (1 in 456,976, actually.)  

But, is today's track a bit of a cheat?  Couldn't it just as easily been spelled properly, as "Explanation"?    

Well, not if you were an X-Phile in the 90s, you couldn't.    

This track began as a tribute to the early synth pop of the original version of the Human League (and the temporary project title was "Heaven League 131"--honoring the two bands that emerged after the original Human League split--Heaven 17 and the (new) Human League.  (The 131 is the bpm.)  I liked the simple but slightly dark sounds I was getting out of the u-he Diva plugin and the unfussy bass sounds from the Cherry Audio Elka-X.  

What surprised me was that it wasn't a dance track--it was more subtle.  Being a former nightclub dj, I do tend to push stronger beats in nearly every uptempo (and many midtempo) tracks that I produce...but this one seemed to want to be more atmospheric, a bit...spooky, even.  

...and that word flipped a switch in my brain about the direction of the track, because it made perfect sense to honor a particular FBI agent, sequestered deep in the basement, obsessively working on the unexplained cases that left the rest of the FBI stumped...  Those cases were filed under the letter X.  

Again, X-Philes wouldn't have needed the explanation.  They would have sussed it out from the thumbnail or even the first vocal snippet.  You probably guessed it from those clues even if you hadn't gone to the first ever convention for this show (which I did), or if you and your friends didn't gather every week to share dinner and the latest episode as it aired (as mine did), or if, somehow, you never managed to crush on at least someone in the cast (I know I certainly did.)  

I gathered a bunch of samples, some of my favorite quotes, some quotes that are simply hilarious when taken out of context, others that are incredibly dramatic...even spooky.  A couple would be terrifying to most people.  

...but, I did something surprising with most of them.  (Surprising for me, at least.)  I threw most of what I'd gathered away.  I didn't want to overwhelm the vibe of the track.  I wanted it to breathe.  Somehow, I resisted the urge to fill the entire canvas with paint.  

So, what you have is a moody synth pop track, with strings and an occasional guitars, and a couple of vocal samples that will always put a smile on my face.  

I hope they will for you, too.

In New Zealand, I dabbled in Programming, Piano, Bass Guitar, Cello, Choirs, & an analog recording studio.
In Australia, I absorbed 1990's Sydney and Melbourne dance cultures, attending clubs, warehouses, forest-parties and major outdoor festivals.
I did one-off sound design jobs for big NYE events etc, collaborating with choreographers, percussionists, singers & fireworks. 
My original house / prog-trance tracks were played on Melbourne's "Kiss FM".
By the mid-2000's, I'd collaborated with D.J.'s, percussionists, a guitarist & a digeredoo player. 
Some tracks were played at outdoor festivals "Rainbow Serpent", "Earthcore", at regular forest parties, Indoor parties and Clubs. Some made it onto Australian T.V., and got rotation on "Street FM" radio.
Two remixes by were released on "Resurgent records" via Beatport, Release Records and 3beat digital.
They were remixes of: Josel (Manchester, UK) and Eiad Sayegh (aka: Bambook, Stockholm, Sweden)(with Anders Ödman.)

I'd always been drawn to Europe, and In the late 2000's, took the opportunity to move Utrecht, The Netherlands, and decided to stay.
Despite busy day jobs and language learning, I've kept creating. The last few years, I delved deeper into synthesis by going vintage analogue, then modular.
