This is a podcast of a guest sermon, given by invitation to the Unitarian Universalist Community of the Catskills.

A guest sermon invited by the Unitarian Universalist Community of the Catskills, Aug 9, 2015.  In it, I discuss Rainer Maria Rilke's conception of "solitude" (Einsamkeit), and its relevance to our contemporary lives.  Explaining how the two dimensions of slowing down temporally and making space spatially figure into the development of solitude as Rilke describes it, I suggest that in our own era, time has become the more scarce resource.

This philosophical poem challenges modern ideas of success and purpose. People often rush through life believing that achievement, diplomas, careers, and personal comfort are the highest goals. Trusting public opinion, they wade “across the river of life” without seeing its depth — forgetting what truly matters.

The poet counters this worldview, reminding us that nothing is more meaningful than children, family, and the continuation of life itself. True happiness is not found in self-indulgence or personal gain, but in love given freely, in responsibility, and in the legacy we leave behind.

The poem argues that the essence of life is not pleasure but contribution — not receiving, but giving. Happiness is not a process, but the result of hard work, devotion, and love.
Drawing on the wisdom of faith, the poet concludes that the purpose of our existence is not ours to define, only to accept — and in that acceptance, to discover real joy.

This is the recording of my short presentation and the Q&A at the second Conversations With Modern Stoicism event, hosted in July 2023 by Phil Yanov. Asked to give a short and provocative presentation about an issue that arises in the everyday applications of Stoicism, I chose to focus on a common mistake and distortion of Stoic philosophy and practice.

Quite a few people think that Stoicism means that a person shouldn't exhibit or feel care, concern, or compassion for others who experience something that they view and react to as "bad". There are indeed some passages from Stoic authors that one can take out of context to justify such a stance. But when Stoicism is rightly understood, and when we look at other, equally authoritative passages, we see that the authentic Stoic position is to be compassionate and concerned with others.

How a wedding anniversary date became a bittersweet, yet empowering, date for a woman who was recently divorced.  Through this song I was reclaiming a newly painful date as a date for my rebirth into the new woman I was becoming.

After nearly a year of writing out my thoughts and processing through a painful divorce and other losses in life, I finally learned how to trust in myself and trust in others again.  I initially started journaling my divorce journey so I could "drop the mask" and finally find out who I truly am and who I want the "new me" to be.  And in the journey, I found new love and discovered that somebody else couldn't love me until I had learned to love myself first.  Through my growth I eventually "dropped the mask".

Real Name: Denis L.
Born: April 9, 1980 — Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

DJ Denis Lop began his career in 1997 at Club “Spice” in Haifa, quickly becoming its resident from 1997–1998. His energetic style and unique musical taste led him to perform across numerous Israeli clubs throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s.

From 2001 to 2002, he served as a resident DJ at Club “Armageddon” (Karmiel), and from 2003 to 2004 — at Club “Spider” (Haifa).
Over the years, he played in many well-known venues, including:

Moving to Canada marked a new creative chapter, inspiring him to continue making music, crafting new remixes, and performing in local clubs with a renewed sound and a distinctly Canadian groove.
