Ninety-three years ago, Mary Creaggan Green began her collegiate career at Kentucky State Industrial College, now known as Kentucky State University (KSU) in Frankfort. 

Founded in 1887 with only fifty-five students, the historically Black college became the second state-supported institution of higher learning in Kentucky. In its early years, KSU struggled with budget issues and stability in its leadership, with presidents changing in short-time spans and clashing with the board of trustees.

The university shifted from training African American teachers to industrial schooling in the 1890s. By the time Green had finished her schooling, KSU was a liberal arts college, transforming to fit the needs of those it served from generation to generation.

From the first floor of Ish Hall to the legacy of the Death Chapter, this record tells the story of 13 men who turned crimson and cream on February 14th, 1990 — a bond forged through discipline, pride, and brotherhood.

“Suit of Diamonds” captures the essence of that journey — the step shows, the parties at Jacksonville State, the fights on the yard, and the love that grew out of every challenge. Each name echoes through history:
Mobetter, Freaky Z (RIP), Nyquil, Tru Luv, Critical Condition, Ambassador, Shaka Zulu, Jokester, Trimmed In Gold, Sixty, Droopy, Quiet Storm, and Beeswax.

This isn’t just a song — it’s a living memory, a tribute to the brotherhood that still stands decades later.

In this episode, we speak with Erjia Yan (Drexel University), Robert Palmer (Howard University), and Chaoqun Ni (University of Wisconsin–Madison) to discuss their upcoming research brief on the challenges HBCUs face in recruiting and retaining faculty. They highlight the 8% decline of faculty at HBCUs between 2013 and 2022, despite the national numbers rising. The podcast explores the reasons why they leave, citing low pay, heavy workloads, limited research support, and bureaucratic hurdles, particularly when Predominantly White Institutions offer better salaries, lighter teaching loads, and stronger infrastructure. Despite the downsides, many remain deeply committed to HBCUs’ mission of educating marginalized students, strengthening the black community, and fostering close connections with colleagues and learners. 

Listen as we discuss the faculty retention issues at HBCUs and their implications for educational equity and institutional sustainability.
