Hess Is More - Yes Boss (Herc Deeman Remix)

The Danish indie luminary Mikkel Hess, alias Hess Is More, will release his new single ‘You Don’t Dance’ on February 6. The track comes off Hess’ forthcoming album, which is set to be released in April on Music For Dreams.

Hess describes the track as “a six-bar chant that bites its own tail. A musical attempt at a recipe for some momentary happiness.”

The production is thoroughly old-school, with vintage synths and old drum machines mixed in with some guitar and bass. The track was played as part of Hess Is More’s award winning performance series Apollonian Blackout, and is now being released in the original studio version.

Hess Is More gained notoriety in the mid-2000’s with his colorful, self-aware, and always deeply original takes on electronic and indie genres. Since then, he has turned out a series of individual and collaborative projects, often veering into other disciplines such as theater and art-installation.

With his forthcoming album, Hess returns as a (mostly) solo artist, with a little help from close family in the writing, performing and producing. The vision is a patchwork of distinctive pop designs, from the minimalist and intimate to the unabashedly expressive. One that is always curious about new configurations of the ironic and the sincere.

Mikkel Hess, alias Hess Is More, continues the run up to his forthcoming album with the single ‘Sometimes You Get Lucky’, dropping March 26 via Music For Dreams.

Hess recently returned from performing a series of ensemble concerts in New York and now sets his sights on his home of Denmark with several shows lined up, among them a sold out release concert at Hotel Cecil. The album, titled CÆKE, will drop April 23 and sees Hess return as (mostly) solo act.

Trained as a drummer, Hess started Hess Is More as an electronic solo project in the mid 00’s and has since evolved into a larger ensemble featuring musicians from both sides of the Atlantic. Hess Is More has released 10 albums and several EP’s and cross-disciplinary works in a career spanning two decades.

Hess Is More has received high acclaim as a live act, winning multiple awards for their cross-disciplinarian shows that often feature elements of theater and art installation.

Having temporarily expanded into a transatlantic ensemble, Hess Is More is back where it started, as Danish artist Mikkel Hess’ (more or less) solo venture through the borderlands of pop music.
 
Gone are the expansive, sprawling works. The sound of CÆKE is minimalist, spacious and candid. The works orbit a more personal, everyday creativity, assembled by piano, drum machines, vintage synths and Hess’ pensive, unhurried voice.
 
In honest Hess-ian fashion, the maturity of the sound is offset by a recurring penchant for the childish, the curious… a subversive lightheartedness, which is easily traced back to Hess’ early works.

DJ and producer Musumeci shares his latest in a highly acclaimed suite of remixes, unveiling an 80’s disco-inspired treatment of the oddball indie-pop cut ‘You Don’t Dance’ by Hess Is More.

The original track comes off the Danish act's recently released CÆKE album, where a muted production of vintage synths frames the recurring mantra: “You don’t dance because you’re happy/You’re happy because you dance.”
 
Musumeci’s ‘Superchic’ version ups the tempo and the flair, perching the chorus in a fully-fledged disco-house build, perfected with swaggering bassline and shimmering synths. Difficult not to move to this one.

Kenneth Bager sends Hess Is More into the stratosphere with new ‘You Don’t Dance’ remix.

The original song was released on Hess Is More album ‘CÆKE’ earlier this year on Bager’s label Music For Dreams. Bager fell in love with the track: a cheeky little synth melody and the oddball fortune cookie mantra: “You don’t dance because you’re happy/You’re happy because you dance.”
 
With his own remix of the track, Bager has put the emphasis on the dance-part. The muted indie-style production has been traded in for a bona fide post-disco rig, teeming with funked-out percussion loops and mischievous little twists to Hess’ ingenious synthwork.
 
The remix is released August 27th on Music For Dreams.
