God's word informs us of many ways to counteract the poison of inevitable adversity Christians will face. Drawing from David’s example in Psalm 62 and other passages, Pastor Steve’s message on the believer’s antidote for adversity uncovers the reality of adversity, the reach of depravity, the need for accountability, the restraint of integrity, and the response of maturity. Steve’s message follows a prayer for one of our members headed for healthcare ministry in Haiti soon.

Appetite – Do you have the appetite to immerse yourself in the complex, emotive world of race equality?
Ask – Ask questions about race, be curious, read, learn and educate yourself.
Accept – Accept there is really a problem. More data aren’t needed.
Acknowledge – Openly acknowledge that the problem needs to be dealt with.
Apologise – Express sympathy that racism is affecting people of certain races.
Assume – Don’t. Instead develop informed views by seeking to understand individuals.
Action – Take demonstrable action steps to establish equality and be accountable.

This month, the Academy Podcast features Luther Smith's teaching from Academy 29 in Burlingame, CA. His lecture on "Faithfulness within Conflict" reminds us that conflict should be embraced as a pathway to healing. Ultimately, Dr. Smith invites us to deal with conflict because “Our obedience requires it." The question he asks us is, "will we engage conflict confidently and creatively, or will we find ourselves unprepared?” Listen on, dear one, and as you listen, breathe deeply and expand gently for our world is in deep conflict and, as Luther suggests, it has always been.

Luther Smith is an ordained elder in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, longtime Academy faculty person, and a member of The Academy Advisory Board. Luther spent 35 years of his career as an activist, scholar, and professor at Candler School of Theology, and he is known to be an authority on the life and theology of Howard Thurman. Luther is Professor Emeritus of Church and Community at Candler. His current research focuses on the writings and  correspondence of Howard Thurman, advocacy on behalf of children, and a spirituality of hope. He is married to Helen Pearson Smith and lives in Stone Mountain, GA. They have four children and five grandchildren.

This lecture discusses key ideas from the work of the 20th century novelist and short story writer, Franz Kafka, "The Metamorphosis"

This lecture discusses two of the other important characters in the story, Gregors mother and father, simply referred to Mrs. and Mr. Samsa. Both of them are aged and in bad health, and dependent upon Gregor, at the start of the story. Mrs. Samsa remains prone to fainting spells, but does take thought about her son and takes on work that can be done in the home. Mr. Samsa goes back to work and becomes active and dynamic again.
