Matthew Reyer, ½ Black/Tuesday, introduces a new project, Hack the Planet!

In this electrifying showdown, four enigmatic codebreakers confront an AI overlord known as the Binary Serpent, battling for control of the digital universe and the freedom of the human mind. 

Poten, the enigmatic Denver-based hardware junkie, known for his cerebral explorations, delivers an energetic and dynamic shot to the algorithm. Sweater, the Philadelphia-based prodigy, propels us on an interstellar journey through a fusion of spacey rhythms and pulsating low-end frequencies. Daisy Boy reminds us that time is a mere illusion, using sound's essence to evoke emotions that transcend the boundaries of the clock. Finally, label boss Reyer orchestrates a multi-pronged attack, diverting the AI's attention with a flurry of decoy data packets and initiating a series of rapid sound injections.

One of my favorite movies. Similar to Tron Legacy it's style over substance but there is nothing not to love about its style. I was around 16 years old so this movie influenced my moldable teenage brain a lot. As a computer scientist there is much to dislike but I just can't. I love every stupid bit  of it:D 

This is quite a deviation from my usual style as it started off as an assignment (I'm studying Experimental Music at the academy). The samples were (imo) horrible and I felt like giving up but then it clicked and I knew how I could turn these horrible little wavs into something more my style.

Guess it'll stay on SoundCloud as the copyright issues won't get it onto Spotify and everywhere else 😅.

Others, like Philadelphia’s Sweater, move more like alchemists—turning sweat, soul, and musical memories into something raw yet refined, something lush yet unflinchingly grounded. His productions are like dimly lit street corners where Jazz-trained fingers meet the restless pulse of underground club culture. There’s warmth in his grooves, but also a sharp edge, a knowing nod to a city that has raised some of the most forward-thinking musicians across HipHop, Soul, and Electronic Music alike.

Having spent his formative years steeped in the Jazz and R&B-soaked history of Philly, and later cutting his teeth at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York, Sweater crafts music that breathes with lived experience. His beats carry the ghost of smoky basement jam sessions, his basslines throb with the after-hours energy of a city that never quite sleeps, and his melodies often feel like they’ve been lifted straight from a half-remembered dream. With releases on labels like Pearled Records, Secret Society Chile, and the ever-patient Blkmarket Music (where his much-anticipated "Contact in the Zone EP" is finally about to surface), his sound moves fluidly between Breakbeat, Techno, and Deep, Hypnotic House.

But Sweater is more than just a producer shaping the musical landscape—he's an essential thread in the very fabric of Philly’s underground. Whether behind the bar slinging cocktails at a packed-out spot during an Eagles playoff run, curating gems at Impressions Philly record shop, or dropping unreleased heaters in a DJ set, he’s constantly immersed in music, living and breathing the culture that fuels his craft. His upcoming ventures include launching Sauna Records, a label where his vault of unreleased material will finally see the light of day, and continuing to sharpen his signature style—emotive, groove-driven, and always with a touch of grit.

In this interview, Sweater sits down with Torture the Artist to discuss Philly’s unsung electronic scene, the winding path that led him to underground dance music, his approach to production, and why the best tool a producer can have might just be the delete button. Hey fellow Hackers superfans,

I wanted to share something special with you all before it officially drops. I’ve loved this film ever since I first saw it in the late 90s. It was one of the first DVDs we ever bought. The soundtrack, the fashion, the neon-cyber vibes. It stuck with me so much that I always dreamed of having my own crew of misfit futuristic pals to nerd out with.

It’s one of those movies I keep coming back to every few years. On my latest rewatch, I realised the 30th anniversary was around the corner, and thought: what better time to make a tribute? Hackers made me nostalgic for a past I was a bit too young to be part of (I was only 7 when it came out), and hungry for a future that never quite arrived.I’m a metal musician and psytrance producer, and I’ve put together a 90s-inspired Goa trance track called “Hack the Planet” — my love letter to Dade, Kate, Cereal Killer, and the whole crew.

Torture the Artist - your source for contemporary electronic music

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
