The Stand returns to the VIFF Centre on Friday, February 28th and runs until March 20th.

A new exhibition at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art in Vancouver is celebrating the work of a Master Haida Artist and his outstanding contributions to his community and culture.

The retrospective exhibition, entitled Kihl ‘Yahda Christian White: Master Haida Artist, spans the career of the renowned carver and multidisciplinary artist, ranging from stunningly detailed stone argillite sculptures and silver jewelery to cedar bentwood boxes and ceremonial masks.

The unifying theme running through the entire exhibition is one of family and community. It tells the story of Kihl ‘Yahda Christian White’s unwavering commitment to uplifting his family and community through apprenticeships, the revival of traditional artistic and cultural practices, and the transformation of his own craft into an artistic community that preserves, shares, and pushes Haida art into the future.

Exhibition Celebrates Haida Master Carver’s Contributions to Art, Culture, and Community

In the fall of 1985, the Haida People began their blockade of a road on Lyell Island, demanding the recognition of aboriginal title to allow them to protect their land from destructive logging and resource extraction. Chris Auchter’s feature documentary The Stand tells the story, now largely-forgotten, of the Haida resistance and their long, complex battle to protect their ancestral land and way of life.

Drawn from archival footage and audio, The Stand provides unprecedented behind-the-scenes access into the planning, organization and execution of the Haida blockade; their engagement with media and political figures as they work to sway public opinion; and insights into the actions and attitudes of police, logging workers and executives.

CJSF’s Jesse Wentzloff met with writer and director Chris Auchter for this interview.

Produced and distributed by the National Film Board of Canada, The Stand opens at the VIFF Centre in Vancouver on Friday, February 28th and plays until Thursday, March 20th. It will be released online for free streaming across Canada on nfb.ca, starting June 19, 2025.

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas est un artiste visuel de la Nation Haïda, auteur et « mischief-maker » (fauteur de troubles). Son art est exposé dans des espaces publics et des collections privées du monde entier, notamment au British Museum, au Metropolitan Museum of Art, au Humboldt Forum de Berlin, au Seattle Art Museum, et au National Museum of the American Indian de Washington.
Le musée a récemment acquis une suite de 9 œuvres de la série « Les Carnets de Daalkaatlii ». Ce groupe de 26 peintures sur acrylique relate – dans une perspective à la fois mythologique et historique – le récit d’une inondation dévastatrice qui s’est produite sur une plaine herbacée (Daalkaatlii) de la grande île d’Haida Gwaii. C’est à cet endroit que s’était établit le peuple Auu Gitans, lignée des grands-pères de Michael Yahgulanaas. En plus de puiser dans la tradition orale de son clan, cette œuvre qui raconte la survie et la résilience d’un peuple constitue également un exercice de mémoire pour le mischief-maker.

Explore the rich and enduring legacy of the Haida people of Haida Gwaii (meaning "Islands of the People"), an archipelago off British Columbia's coast. Occupied for over 10,000 years, the Haida's history is deeply intertwined with the land and sea.
Often likened to "Vikings of the Pacific Northwest," the Haida were master seafarers renowned for their large cedar canoes, extensive trade networks, and formidable warrior culture. Their society was intricate, structured around Eagle and Raven clans with a matrilineal system, and marked by significant potlatch ceremonies that renewed social bonds and demonstrated status through generosity.
Haida artistry is a cornerstone of their identity, with totem poles serving as a "visual language" to pass on histories, clan identities, and spiritual connections. Their art, including argillite carving practiced for 10,000 years, is not merely decorative but deeply purposeful and ceremonial.
The Haida worldview is rooted in a profound spiritual connection to nature, believing in reincarnation and a circular view of life, with salmon holding immense importance for survival and spiritual renewal.
Despite facing devastating impacts from European contact, including smallpox epidemics and colonial policies like the ban on potlatches and the residential school system, the Haida have shown remarkable resilience. Today, the Haida Nation is experiencing a powerful cultural renaissance, actively working to preserve their language, revive their art, and reclaim their ancestral lands, notably through the co-management of the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site.

The arts of Africa, Oceania, Asia, and the Americas now form part of the historical and artistic grand tour of the capital. The Musée du quai Branly is an innovative cultural institution - museum, educational and research centre, and public living space all in one. Built on one of the last available sites in the heart of Paris, the architectural design of this original project is the work of Jean Nouvel.
