Smoke In My Rearview

One day, the righteous Khidr visited the Yasawi lodge. He noticed that the Pir of Turkistan, Khoja Ahmad Yasawi—a man whose heart was usually radiant with joy—looked deeply sorrowful. Greeting the assembly, Khidr knelt before the venerable Master and asked, "I travel the seven climes and knock on seventy doors every day seeking a worthy companion, yet I have found no brother more righteous and pure-hearted than you. The Almighty has granted you exalted spiritual stations. Surrounded by such boundless grace, what is the cause of your sorrow?"
The Pir of Turkistan replied, "A heavy gloom has fallen upon my dervishes. For days, their hearts have been seized by a spiritual contraction (qabd), shattering their inner peace. Their distress weighs heavily on my own heart." Upon hearing this, Khidr tightly crossed his arms over his chest and began to chant the dhikr "Hay" (The Ever-Living) in a loud, rhythmic voice. The entire room fixed its gaze upon him, as none of the dervishes had ever witnessed this particular dhikr performed in the Master's presence. As Khidr chanted, the heavy atmosphere in the lodge instantly lifted. The spiritual constriction in the dervishes' hearts melted away, replaced by a profound sense of expansion and relief (bast). After Khidr finished and departed, the amazed dervishes asked their Master about the mysterious guest. Khoja Ahmad Yasawi answered, "That was Khidr (peace be upon him). He came to bestow this dhikr upon us as a gift." From that day forward, the Saw Dhikr became a foundational collective practice in the Yasawi path.

"Zikr-i-Arra" literally translates to the "Saw Dhikr." It earned this name because the deep, guttural exhales produced during the chant strongly resemble the harsh sound of a saw cutting through wood. For the Sufis, this sound is highly symbolic: they imagine the dhikr acting as a saw, relentlessly cutting away their base ego (nafs).

According to tradition, the roots of this practice trace back to the Prophet Zechariah (peace be upon him). While dedicating his life to calling the Children of Israel to the Truth, he was forced to flee into a forest to escape his murderous persecutors. The disbelievers tracked him down and discovered he was hiding inside the hollow trunk of a large tree. Without hesitation, they brought a two-handed saw and began cutting through the tree—and the Prophet inside it. Knowing his martyrdom was imminent, Zechariah stood in the narrow hollow with his arms crossed over his chest. When the teeth of the saw first bit into his flesh, he involuntarily cried out in pain, "Ah!" At that moment, the Almighty spoke to His Prophet: "O Zechariah... Do not sigh or lament. In this moment, remember Me by chanting 'Hay', and your Lord, the Ever-Living, will grant you salvation." Zechariah immediately began to chant "Hay," his voice intertwining with the grating sound of the disbelievers' saw, and thus the Prophet of God attained martyrdom.

The origins of this dhikr with Prophet Zechariah are immortalized in the Hikmets (Divine Wisdoms) of Khoja Ahmad Yasawi:

Show me Your true love, O Lord, that I may be filled with gratitude,
If they set the saw upon me, let me chant Your name like Zechariah,
Let me bear my trials with the patience of Job,
Whatever You decree, make me a true lover of Yours, O Sustainer.

The Saw Dhikr carries immense spiritual magnetism (jazbah). During the Yasawi dervish gatherings, the Master's hikmets were chanted to the rhythm of this dhikr. As the chanting accelerated, the collective spiritual ecstasy soared higher and higher. The raw, rhythmic power of the Saw Dhikr perfectly suited the fierce, resilient nature of the nomadic Turkic tribes of the steppes. For centuries, its sound echoed across the lands of Turkistan, serving as a powerful vessel for Divine mercy.

I used to think growth meant becoming something better.
Now I think it means becoming something truer.

This song came from a realisation that hit me harder than I expected…
that a lot of people, myself included, get caught up chasing validation at the surface level. The parts we show. The “bloom”.

But what about the roots?

What about the parts no one sees… the foundations, the struggle, the quiet growth that doesn’t get applause?

“Roots Don’t Need Permission” is about that shift.
Letting go of the idea that you need someone else to recognise your worth before you’re allowed to feel it. Realising you don’t need permission to grow, to take up space, to become.

It’s not about pushing people away.
It’s about not abandoning yourself to keep them.

This track sits somewhere between indie, pop, and alternative rock… starting soft and reflective, then building into something bigger, louder, more certain. Like that moment when something finally clicks inside you and you can’t unsee it.

In tonight’s session, we focus on:

Gratitude for the Dark: Honouring the lessons and the stillness of the winter months.

Equinox Balance: Finding the equilibrium between day and night, inner and outer worlds.

Spring Awakening: Setting intentions for the growth, creativity, and "seasonal effects" of the coming months.

Find a comfortable space, dim the lights, and let the frequencies of the bowls help you transition into this new season with an open and grateful heart.

No belief required. Just presence. Just listening.
