Beyond the decks, Tania's dedication to her craft extends to her meticulous attention to detail in the studio, resulting in captivating and forward-thinking tracks that resonate with listeners. [Premiere] Birds - Prelude (Hedchef's Preclusion Mix) (out on Feed The Void)

UK-born, Melbourne-based Hedchef creates the kind of sharp, off-kilter club constructions that disorientate and delight the dancefloor in equal measure. Showing discipline to a militant ethos of pushing the envelope, futurism and point-blank rejection of nostalgia, irony and pastiche, Hedchef’s groove-based, breakdown-light arrangements align closer to classic techno and electro than dubstep or garage, whilst his razor-sharp sound design draws from influences closer to drum ‘n’ bass and the UK bass-driven music spectrum to add imaginative, gritty edges to the rolling flow.

It’s this intricate musicianship which has seen Hedchef release on acclaimed labels including Scuffed Recordings in London, New York-based Worst Behaviour and Berlin’s International Chrome, with a stacked schedule of releases coming out in 2025 that continue the mission of expanding the boundaries of functional club tools. These tracks can be heard in the sets of some of the world’s most venerated DJs and tastemakers, from Dave Clarke and Anastasia Kristensen to Detroit In Effect, Jensen Interceptor and Solid Blake. Most recently, his collaborations with cross-genre wizard Doctor Jeep have been a staple in the international club circuit.

Which artists has influenced you the most? 
- I often get the most inspiration from non-musical sounds I just happen to come across, and particularly ones that are non-organic - industrial fans, unusual feedback, an oddly creaky door - but artist-wise I'd go with Drexciya, Burial and Sunn O))).

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future? 
- Lots of stuff to come this year - the most imminent is an EP on Prague-based imprint YUKU which I'm very happy with, and a longer collection of tracks on a Dutch label to be announced soon. I'm also playing with visual ideas for launching my own label, so it's probably a long way off but keep your eyes out for that.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now? 
- The aforementioned YUKU, Typeless, Scuffed, Pinkman, Amniote Editions, Nerve Collect.

What inspires you now to create music? 
- Working with other musicians in my capacity as a tutor and engineer - learning is always a two-way process and I'm often unbelievably inspired to write some of my own material after a good session working on someone else's.

What set-up do you use when creating music?
- 100% software - I have used and owned various pieces of hardware in the past but I just adore the level of flexibility you have to iterate, automate and revisit ideas whilst working in the box. In the studio I primarily use Ableton, Vital, Reason Rack, VCV Rack, the Fabfilter suite and a few other plug-ins.

Tales of squid, rattlesnakes and ayahuasca paint the psychedelic landscape of the trip. This one’s hard hitting and full of impeccable sound design and bold structures that move away from dance music’s traditional linear format.

Remixes come from UK Bass producer K-65, who’s crafted a high energy version of ‘Pepper’s Ghost’, as well as FTV label head Birds, with a dark and twisted take on ‘Diamondback Rattlesnake’ (featuring her signature live vocals) and New York based producer Doctor Jeep with a peak time percussive rework of ‘Earl Grey Ayahuasca.’
