Wenn Kinder leiden, dann leidet die ganze Familie. Dieses Leid zu lindern, den Eltern schwerst erkrankter, pflegebedürftiger Kinder eine Atempause zu verschaffen, in der sie Kraft tanken können, das und mehr hat sich das Kinderhospiz Bärenherz in Markkleeberg vor den Toren Leipzigs auf die Fahnen geschrieben. Bei dem Begriff „Hospiz“ denkt mensch zunächst an einen Ort, an dem Menschen ihre letzten Tage hier auf Erden in Frieden und Würde verbringen können. Tatsächlich kommen Kinder auch zum Sterben ins Bärenherz, aber der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit der etwa 35 festen Mitarbeiter – von der Hauswirtschaft, dem Pflegepersonal bis hin zu den sozial und psychologisch Betreuenden – liegt auf der Entlastung von Familien.

Zehn Kinder vom Säuglings- bis ins Jugendlichenalter können hier nicht nur medizinisch, sondern auch psycho-sozial betreut werden. Fünf Elternwohnungen bieten auch den Geschwisterkindern die Möglichkeit, in der Nähe ihrer pflegebedürftigen Geschwister zu sein. Auch sie bedürfen der Zuwendung, denn in der Regel dreht sich daheim alles um das schwerkranke Kind. Und manche Eltern können hier nach Monaten oder Jahren das erste Mal Nächte durchschlafen. Ulrike Herkner, die Geschäftsführerin des „Kinderhospiz Bärenherz Leipzig e.V.“ :„Ohne Spenden und ehrenamtliches Engagement könnte das Bärenherz diese wertvolle Arbeit nicht leisten.“ Eine Gruppe von Ehrenamtlichen organisiert Unterstützungs-Veranstaltungen, andere arbeiten im ambulanten Hospizdienst oder helfen bei bei der Betreuung der Familien im Hospiz mit. Letztere Gruppe allerdings durchläuft zunächst eine einjährige Schulung, bevor sie diese sensible Arbeit übernehmen darf. „Da wollen zunächst eigene Ängste im Umgang mit Leid, Tod und Sterben angeschaut werden“, so sinngemäß Silvia Heumann, die Leiterin des Kinderhospizes. 

Das Kinderhospiz Bärenherz ist eines von derzeit etwa 14 stationären Kinderhospizen in Deutschland, allerdings das bisher einzige in Sachsen.
