Colorful, mysterious, passionate, this sonata was written for violist, Chiu-Chen Liu. She is also a gifted visual artist.

Here in my dedication:

"Because you are a visual artist and violist who likes Hindemith, the first movement is based on the first phrase of his 'Mathias the Painter.'"

Because your sense of color is so vibrant, the second movement is based on a bar from one of the most colorful works, Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Scheherazade.'

The final movement is based on "The Great Gate of Kiev" from Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." This is also meant to support Ukraine in this terrible time of Russian aggression.

Duo Himmel è composto dal trombettista Marco Trebbi e dal pianista e compositore David Salvage.  Il loro prima esibizione si è svolta in piena pandemia nel aprile 2021 di fronte in una sala da concerto vuota, salvo la macchina di ripresa e i tecnici.  Nel frattempo sono riusciti a riempire quella stessa sala di gente e a registrare un disco, Dal ‘600 al ‘900.  Marco si esibisce anche con l’Orchestra Senzaspine e l’Accademia del Teatro Comunale di Bologna.  David Salvage è un compositore le cui opere sono pubblicate da Universal Edition, Vienna.

Kenneth Lieberson is a composer of symphonies, concertos, tone poems, theater and chamber music, songs, cantatas and a one act opera. His music has been heard on National Public Radio, at The Library of Congress, Lincoln Center, Queens College, NYU, Stony Brook, CAMI Hall, Merkin Hall and at high and middle schools. His B. M. and M. M. are from Juilliard. He also earned an M.B.A. at NYU's Stern School of Business.

Mr. Lieberson has also written two novellas, dozens of short stories and hundreds of poems.  He illustrated some of these.

Wells Leng (1994-) is a performer/composer/improviser based in Los Angeles. Having graduated from USC with a BM in Composition and a BA in Piano Performance and CalArts with an MFA in the Performer-Composer program, they have studied composition with Donald Crockett, Brian Head, Andrew Norman, Frank Ticheli, Andrew McIntosh, and Nicholas Deyoe; piano with Antoinette Perry and Vicki Ray; cello with Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick. As both a performer and composer, Wells has collaborated with many other artists all over the world. An active member of the LA taiko community, they have worked closely with prominent artists such as San Jose Taiko, Kris Bergstrom, Isaku Kageyama, Shoji Kameda, as well as other musicians specializing in Japanese music; Kozue Matsumoto and Rachel Rudich. Wells is part of House on Fire Trio, stickytack, and Quartet Friends. Aside from playing taiko, cello, and piano, they are also an amateur player of several other instruments. Wells is currently the collaborative keyboardist at Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church.
