Easter_ Christ is Risen

It's Easter Sunday! We're getting started here with a brief retelling of the story. Then we get to the part where the angel says, "Do not be afraid." I have trouble with this. Maybe we all have trouble with this. There's so much in the world that causes us fear. So what makes this angel think he can come into our place of worship, look us straight in the eye and say with all seriousness, "Do not be afraid?"

After he tells us not to be afraid he makes an announcement and then a promise.  

An announcement that, if true, changes everything. He is risen. What if that's true? If it's true, it changes everything and all things are possible.

Then he makes a promise: Jesus is ahead of you. Most of what causes us fear is in the future. It's an uncertain tomorrow. Jesus is ahead of us. Jesus promises to be with us in whatever we face in our uncertain future. And that gives us hope.

Of course, hope isn't something we can just sit back and enjoy. Welp, I hope everything turns out okay tomorrow! Welp, I hope God shows up tomorrow. That's wishful thinking. Hope, real hope, is to throw ourselves into the struggle for the realization of that hope.

And that's how Matthew's story about Jesus ends. It ends with an invitation to live into resurrection - to live into hope - an invitation to let it define our lives.

April 20, 2025 Easter Sunday "Let Resurrection Define Our Lives"

On Maundy Thursday Jesus washes the feet of His disciples, giving them an example of service. He eats the Passover meal with them and shares His own Supper with them, a Supper we still partake of today.  He prays in the Garden of Gethsemane that God's will would be done, knowing full well that it meant His death.  And He loved His people until the end.  That ending comes on Good Friday as He says, "it is finished."  What began with the Palm Sunday entrance begins to build on Maundy Thursday. 

Message 04/17/2025 - Jesus Eats, Prays, and Loves - Text: Matthew 26:17-46, John 13:1-7

As we gather on Good Friday, we see Jesus' beaten, bruised, bloody body on the cross.  His body that is nailed for us.  His blood that is shed for us.  His death that is died to give us life.  Seeing what Jesus went through can create many feelings for us.  Sometimes we want to feel all those emotions.  Sometimes we don't.  Even though we can't begin to understand all that Jesus went through for us, we know that He did it to save us, to redeem us, to rescue us, because He loves us.  And because of His death, all the God required of Jesus to bring us forgiveness, it is finished. 

Message 04/18/2025 - The Feelings of Good Friday - Text: Matthew 27:39-47, 51-54; Luke 23:32-47, 55-56

On Easter Sunday, the women go to the tomb to prepare Jesus' body.  He isn't there.  The angels tell them.  But still, they are looking for His body, they're perplexed.  The disciples hear from the women.  They go to the tomb, it's empty.  They're confused, they don't understand, they go back home.  Mary Magdalene sees Jesus who she thinks is the gardener, asking if He knows where Jesus' body is.  Eventually they will all see, they will all believe, but that first Easter Sunday did not begin with shouts of "Alleluia! Christ is Risen!"

On Palm Sunday, we reflect of Jesus’ position as the selfless king. This will bring up two questions that we need to answer: Will we embrace his message of love and salvation? Will we follow him in sacrifice and service? Listen in to hear more.

Via Dolorosa (Sixth Hour)

Down the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem that day
The soldiers tried to clear the narrow street
But the crowd pressed in to see
The man condemned to die on Calvary
He was bleeding from a beating, there were stripes upon His back
And He wore a crown of thorns upon His head
And He bore with every step
The scorn of those who cried out for His death
