Charles and Liz Amos made the difficult decision to stop hop farming in the 1980s. They converted Spring Grove Farm into six holiday flats, which they managed until they sold the property for residential use. Liz explains why they had to stop farming.

A Reluctant Decision

Alan was a close friend of Charles Amos, the last hop farmer at Spring Grove Farm in Wye. He comments on some of the financial difficulties which Charles faced.

Antiquated Machinery

Peter worked at the Wye College Hop Research Department until it closed in 2007. He reflects on the closure of the College in 2009.

A Great Shame

Peter set up Wye Hops Ltd in 2007 to continue the breeding work of the Wye College Hop Research Department until he retired in March 2020. He describes why he named the company Wye Hops Ltd.

Ali Capper is in partnership at Stocks Farm, Suckley, Worcestershire UK with her husband Richard and his father Mark, the Cappers specialise in growing hops and apples. They farm dessert & cider apples and hops. 

Stocks Farm is a 200 year old hop and fruit farm on the glorious Herefordshire/Worcestershire border. It has been farmed by the Capper family since 1962, and is proud to be growing Award Winning British Hops and Apples in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Ali is a Director of the Oxford Farming Conference and she is Chairman of the NFU's National Horticulture & Potatoes Board, British Apples & Pears and Wye Hops. Her Nuffield Scholarship in 2014 focused on the export of great British hops, and niche apple varieties, travelling to Germany, New Zealand, Canada, USA, France, Belgium and Vietnam.

Buy British apples when you see them and help UK farmers

This recording is comprised of 41 contact mic recordings of Hukins Hops 1950's Bruff hop picking machinery processing the 2025 hop harvest. The recordings took place on the 9th of September 2025 on site at Hukins Hops in St Michaels, Tenterden, Kent. 

From hooking the bines, threshing and picking hops, separating cones from leaf matter, to conveying to the oast and packing into bales, nearly all parts of the factory processes of picking and separating hops have been captured.

The equipment used was comprised of two Metal Marshmallow Roaster plus Morsel contact mics, blu tac for adhesion to various surfaces on the machinery, with the recording taking place on a SoundDevices MixPre 3 II.

Editing has been performed for balance, employing M/S EQ (reducing side bass, boosting mid bass, and sometimes boosting side highs too), stereo mix adjustment (as all recordings started out as dual mono L + R), and loudness adjustment to BS1770.

This is an interview between Cloudwater's Paul Jones, Tom Upton (Farm Manager) from Hukins Hops, and David Deacon (previously of Hop Engineering, Kent) recorded at Hukins Hops in St Michaels, Tenterden, Kent. 

The three discuss the current state of the UK's hop growing industry, including historical highs, contemporary issues, and opportunities for improving the future of the UK hop industry.
