The tune you hear before you now was inspired by warm summer mornings, spent catching up over cups of tea with a good friend in his enchanting garden against a backdrop of birdsong.

Hortus began life as an oddly-matched jumble of bleeps and quirky beats, and was given shape and clarity when I stumbled by chance upon the sitar sample that you'll hear clips of throughout the piece. From that point on, the track steadily came together over a period of several weeks but, as with all of my song ideas that I eventually see through to completion, the original vision that inspired it remained with me right throughout the creative process.

Hortus was written and recorded during the summer of 2023 and was made entirely in Ableton Live 11, running on a Windows 11 laptop.

The artwork is by another good friend, the very talented collage artist Karl Vint, and is entitled, Looking Out For You.

De Soundscape bootst een geluidswandeling na in de Hortus botanicus Leiden. Deze luisterervaring neemt het publiek mee op een hypothetische tour door de verschillende delen van de tuin.
Omdat geen enkele bezoeker de kans zou krijgen om de geluiden van de vroege ochtend in de Hortus te horen, begint de compositie met de bedoeling een droomvisioen weer te geven. In deze droom hoor je het zoete gezang van de eerste vogels en een eenzame wandeling door droge, knapperige bladeren. Door het luiden van een bel en het unieke geluid van het draaihek, word je wakker en voel je je meteen ondergedompeld in de botanische tuin.
De ochtend, vol leven, begint met zijn activiteiten. Via de ingang wordt u begroet door de geluiden van het restaurant en door de kassa.
Het bezoek aan de Hortus botanicus begint; het gaat verder richting de Tropische Kas en vervolgens naar de Victoriakas. Terwijl u hier weggaat, wordt u langzaam verwelkomd door de verschillende natuurlijke middaggeluiden, die vervagen bij de komst van een onweersbui en vol leven terugkeren nadat de storm voorbij is.
De ervaring eindigt in de Clusiustuin, met een knapperige wandeling over de schelpen die via de karakteristieke poort van de Hortus naar de uitgang leidt.
Al het geluidsmateriaal werd eind mei 2024 door de componist Giulio Patuzzi zelf opgenomen op verschillende tijdstippen van de dag – vroege ochtend, ochtend, middag, avond.

The Soundscape recreates a Soundwalk at the Hortus botanicus of Leiden. This listening experience takes the audience on a hypothetical tour through the various areas of the garden.
Since no visitor would have the chance to hear the sounds of early morning at the Hortus, the composition begins with the intent to depict a dream vision. In this dream, you hear the sweet song of the first birds and a solitary walk through dry, crispy leaves. By the chime of a bell and the unique sound of the turnstile gate, you wake up and you feel immediately immersed in the botanical garden.
The morning, full of life, starts with its activities. Through the entrance, you are greeted by the sounds of the restaurant and by the ticket office.
The visit of the Hortus botanicus begins; it continues towards the Tropical Glasshouse and then to the Victoria greenhouse. While exiting from here, you are slowly welcomed by the various natural afternoon sounds, which fade away with the arrival of a thunderstorm and return full of life after the storm passes.
The experience concludes at the Clusius garden, with a crunchy walk on the shells that leads towards the exit through the characteristic gate of the Hortus.
All sound materials were recorded by the composer Giulio Patuzzi himself at the end of May 2024 at various times of the day – early morning, morning, afternoon, evening.

I make lo-fi, melodic, instrumental electronica, conceived, composed and recorded using only a laptop and a digital audio workstation (currently Ableton Live 11).

Due to domestic constraints, I work entirely on headphones so it probably follows that my recordings are best appreciated via the same medium.
