Nu Generation Hero Talk - Captain America Trailer Drops

We're teeing up next week's big return of the MCU with Deadpool & Wolverine by looking back at the first collaboration between director Shawn Levy and the Huge Jacked Man, a futuristic underdog sports movie about robot boxing. Yes it's 2011's Real Steel, starring Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Hope Davis, James Rebhorn and returning ADHD-DVD favourite Kevin Durand. While it's often described as Robot Rocky, it hues much closer to a Robot Over The Top. Based on a short story by Richard Matheson that was adapted into The Twilight Zone episode "Steel", produced by Spielberg and Zemeckis, and backed by a winning cast, all the ingredients are here to make a smart and affecting family-friendly action movie, but like its sadsack loser protagonist, it just can't put it together. Plus Justin's got theatrical field reports on Longlegs and A Quiet Place: Day One.

If you'd like to watch Real Steel before listening to the show, it is currently streaming in Canada on Netflix at the time of publication.

#465 - She's Really Talkin'

Deadpool 2 put us in such a foul mood when it came out in 2018 that we threw away our podcast on it. It was too toxic to publish. Fortunately, Deadpool & Wolverine, the third in the series, didn't have such an effect on us - even José found some things to compliment about it.

Perhaps it's the relative diminishment of Marvel since its peak in 2018, when it was reaching the climax of the story it had been building for a decade, that makes Deadpool & Wolverine work as it otherwise might not - its jokes about the X-Men joining the MCU at a low point really landed, for example. It's far from perfect - Ryan Reynolds' schtick remains smug, and the film tries to have it both ways, delivering snarky commentary on the sorts of things films like this do, then discarding the snark when it wants to do them itself. But it's pacey, energetic, full of intense action with a delightfully cartoony attitude, filled with so many attempts to make you laugh that some of them are bound to work, and featuring a pair of enjoyable, charismatic villains: Matthew Macfadyen's Mr. Paradox is a marvellously hammy presence, while Emma Corrin's Cassandra Nova's slight physique and genteel demeanour make her telepathic abilities all the more threatening.

We’re near the end of this month’s movie theme examining various futures in film. We’ve been calling it SOME BULLSHIT TOMORRROW and while most tomorrows have been bullshit, this near future has some optimism. This future is so concerned with CTE damage in combat sports that humans have been replaced by fighting robots. Imagine if your rock ‘em sock ‘em robots could dance and dismember. Shawn Levy’s 2011 film “REAL STEEL” made its money and seemed to fade back into pop culture obscurity. This flawed family drama starring Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lily and Anthony Mackie finds a beating heart amongst the mechanical carnage. Will this near future film find its cult appreciators? What works and what doesn’t? We got something to say about it. We always do.

DOFP is arguably not only one of the greatest X-Men movies, but greatest movies in general. Still want Wolves to show some real fighting skills! So badly wanted him to get one strike at Magneto in DOFP! The franchise is messy regarding the timeline. Different directors, different visions, multiple origin stories. I'm sure one day we'll get the ultimate Dark Phoenix saga.

I also discuss the then upcoming Deadpool movie, which is now in development of its third installment- and Hugh Jackman is back as Wolverine!

X-Men on the big screen & news of Deadpool! RPC #9 from March 2013

While 2017s "Logan" was a much more powerful and successful entry for the character, 2013s forgotten "The Wolverine" is rarely even mentioned. The teaser for DOFP was the highlight, and while I enjoyed the characters and action throughout- it just wasn't captivating enough, not like some other X-Men movies. However, I'd watch this over X3 and Origins.
