Question: My first question is for Nick. What are the primary objectives of the WIOA program at Capital Area Michigan Works!, and how do these objectives align with the broader goals of workforce development in our region?
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act program (WIOA) at CAMW! aims to improve the skills and employability of job seekers by providing access to training, education and job placement services. 
The program focuses on aligning training with local labor market needs to help individuals secure employment in high-demand industries. 
A key strategy to accomplish this is engaging with local employers to understand their workforce needs and ensure that the training they provide aligns with industry requirements. 
The program prioritizes services for disadvantaged populations, including low-income individuals, veterans and those with disabilities. It seeks to provide these groups with the necessary resources and support to overcome barriers to employment, including lack of education, certification or required training. Individuals who are enrolled receive an average of $5,000 that can be used to offset the cost of obtaining credentials for jobs in our region. These credentials may include training within industries like medical services, information technology, manufacturing, truck driving and more. 
WIOA can also assist with other training and employment retention costs, such as auto repairs, tools, uniforms, equipment and transportation. 
Furthermore, WIOA includes specific provisions for youth services, focusing on helping young people gain work experience, educational credentials, and career pathways. 
The objectives of the WIOA program at CAMW! align with broader regional economic development goals by addressing skills gaps and supporting local businesses. 
By training individuals for in-demand occupations, the program helps drive economic growth and competitiveness in the Capital Area. 
The resources provided by WIOA also improve workforce quality and mobility, inclusive growth and regional resilience.

Ep. #1. Exploring The AI Regulatory Landscape (Powered by AI)

In this paper, we argue that the rapid expansion of exports as a share of global
wine production is strongly related to the invention of flexitanks for wine transportation and the concurrent exponential growth of the bulk wine industry. Bulk wine fundamentally changes wine production, from the organisation of grape growing to the commercialisation of the final product, as it enables companies to assemble wine across the globe by establishing new connections between distant rural regions. Building on ethnographic fieldwork with New Zealand and Chilean bulk wine producers and German large-scale
wineries which specialise in bulk wine blending and bottling, our aim in this paper is to investigate how these new connections are forged and sustained. Drawing on the work of Çalışkan and Callon, we consider marketisation processes to be composed of different types of framing, and we analyse three of them in respect of the bulk wine market: objectification of goods, marketising agencies, and market encounters. Through detailed analysis of one market encounter that we have called “wine design sessions,” we show that German retailers align the other bulk wine agencies in a way that means they are well placed to decide on the final composition of the wines in a highly flexible accumulation scheme. It is through these wine design sessions and the practices of tasting, comparing, designing, analysing, and controlling wines that they organise the assembling and objectification of bulk wines from Chile and New Zealand (and from other countries around the globe) according to their specifications. Hence, rather than through top-down pressure, coordination in the bulk wine market is accomplished through mundane practices and mechanisms which allow for action at a distance and which connect (and sometimes disconnect) rural regions on a global stage.

Healthcare Rap: A Dynamic Chat With Beryl Institute’s Jason Wolf (#361)

Chang Liu, UC Irvine professor of biomedical engineering, is a leader in the field of directed evolution, an effort to train genes to evolve in a laboratory in order to perform desired functions. Through this method of gene engineering, researchers hope to create new biological substances for use in pharmaceuticals and as cheaper and more environmentally responsible industrial catalysts. The work is also helping the scientific community build genetic knowledge for the benefit of bioengineering. 

Liu's research group has a new paper out in the journal Science in which they discuss improvements to their OrthoRep gene evolution platform. The system allows mutations to happen a million times faster than natural evolutionary time frames. In this episode of the UCI Podcast, speaks with UC Irvine communicator Brian Bell about the findings detailed in the paper.
